It's not really different from most of the cancerous things you see on the internet these days. It's easy to create content that you can shit out day after day and people who are lonely will give you money so they can either pretend to have friends to joke around with or get some positive attention from the opposite sex.

I think people in generally are just really lonely these days and nobody taught them how to fulfill those needs in a healthy way.

The fact that people give them money shows that they're doing something right and providing something people want to see, no different from any other entertainer. Entertainment comes in countless forms and maybe this particular form is not for you (or me, hell I've never donated to any streamer) but at the end of the day the world doesn't revolve around you and me.

I don't think it's anything that needs "defending" because I don't consider it an evil in the first place, it's just people making a living by giving other people what they want. It's not exactly an automatic road to riches anyway, for every streamer raking in 1k donations you have ten thousand if not more with single-digit viewer counts.
