Does Smash count? Because I style on my friends in Melee and 4. And played Smash 4 at college with people who went to tournaments and I did a good job holding my own and occasionally winning.

No one in my friend group likes traditional fighters but I've tried to introduce them a few times (Tried Street Fighter 3, Soul Calibur, and then Tekken Tag Tournament 2). I only know the basics really because of that. The club was also only Smash there was no traditional FGC scene.

My main problem is that there's not a FGC scene where I live.
