I played it in the beta and I was already cautious because I distinctively remember my dissapointment and actual feeling of rage back then when DoW2 came out and realized Relic isn't a good developer brand anymore.

DoW2 was such a dissapointment and a lackluster in general on release but at least gained a small following because it introduced some Company of Heroes mechanics that are good, albeit really dumbed down. People didn't liked the shift in scope of fighting and terrain control with branching techs like the first did, no base building and less units and content to work upon. So the third said that they wanted to incorporate the best of both worlds and "go back to its roots".

The product was an even more lackluster release than Dawn of War 2 and CoH2 combined. It has NOTHING from any previous golden era Relic games (CoH1, HW and DoW) and it's a mixture between a MOBA and a simplistic RTS with no strategy impact on the outcome. It literally has heroes and lanes, the squads you build can be called as well minions for the heroes to farm upon, has turrets and a nexus like a MOBA, and delivers poorly on both ends of the aborted mix of genres.

Not tactical enough, not strategic enough, not MOBAish enough, bland looking, less animations, and the most vomitable and horrid of the voice actings. It's mediocre on every end and there's so much lacking that no patches or tweaks will fix it unless it's a full blown expansion as big or bigger than the base game.

It needs TWICE the development time and effort to make it good. It's the definition of mediocre.

Relic hasn't been good ever since the depression in 2009 but this is pajeet game design and corner cutting like never before.

To add to that, tech trees feel thin because of the skull system that has a lot of elements that should either be upgrades for your units or just behavior by default (like Shootaboyz using stikkbombs when getting scrap, automatically tossing one against certain enemies, Devastators inflicting suppression, I think that was a Doctrine at one point) and it undermines the tactical depth of the game that all these things are effectively off-the-board elements.

It's just a way of separating the points from each other for easier reading especially on smaller screens. It's more a courtesy for the reader than anything else.

I can't speak for actual game play but the value compared to 1 and 2 is not there. The first game has every single army except tyrannids as playable. 2 has a few less, but still more than twice what the 3rd game has. For $60 you get three armies and like 1 or 2 game modes. It is the poster child of stripped bare to sell more DLC.

Steam gave me a 50% off coupon specifically for this game. Even at $30 there is not enough value.

elite mod was excellent and truly showed how far fans of the game were willing to go to improve it. DOW3 however cannot be salvaged, it just isn't fun to play. Not sure how you ramp up the scale but keep the good CoH squad shit of DOW2 without it being overwhelming. 3v3 faction wars are about the scale everything should be at but it's probably too hard to manage on average for 1v1. Battles would be hard to track without base building at that point. Not that base building has to be particularly intricate, but it needs to be serviceable. You can hand wave some lore. Blood Ravens aren't particularly codex compliant and you can fluff them into preferring to deploy via portable structures and establish beachheads or some shit.

I've also heard that Space Hulk Deathwing has become a decent since the devs seem to genuinely care about that game and with the upcoming console release, they apparently have quite some new stuff to come.

As somebody who has never played a DoW here is why I didn't buy it
