That's only because Hesse tries to make any character he works with more emotive. In contrast, CD's opening has Sonic comes across as stoic because he only makes two different facial expressions during the whole clip.

You also have to take into account modern interpretations of classic Sonic and co. Nowadays classic Knuckles is usually depicted as the more stoic and determined one (although he typically falls on his face while doing so), whereas Sonic is depicted as being more show-offish and having more fun as he bounces around.
