Have you ever had your shit "hacked" or fucked with online before /v/?
The worst I've ever experienced is getting ddossed
>>
I must have done something stupid because a russian used my paypal once. I am not dumb enough to fall for obvious scams and several scanners found no positives on both my machines. I got the cash back and changed all relevant passwords, but to this day I don't know how they got it
>>
>>387425247
You can be as safe as you want but that won't stop idiot web designers from storing your passwords in weakly encrypted databases which get broken into all the time either via inside jobs or external intrusion.

Yup. When I was young my friend got his steam account hacked. I messaged him unknowingly and the guy using his account sent me a link telling me to check out this account he wasn't using. After signing into the account through steam, my steam account was "frozen" or "disabled" or something. Had to call steam and get them to let me access it again. After he got his account back he kept the steam bio the guy had. He said it was funny to him
>>
>>387425049

had my WoW account hacked by someone in china a couple years ago. No clue how they got in or even why they would want to.
>>
>>387425049
Stopped playing wow for a year once.

When I tried to play again, my password had been changed.

When I recovered my account and logged in, whoever stole the account had maxed out my professions and farmed a ton of gold.

Pretty good experience.

Yeah, if people understood that hackers use that kinds of methods they would start using multiple email accounts for different things and not repeat passwords ever.
You really need to use throwaway email accs on sites that dont have the money to have good security.

Someone stole my Minecraft account but I got it back. I also had their email so I send them gay shit when I feel so inclined

>sites that dont have the money to have good security.
It's not like Adobe or Sony are tiny companies.
They could have all the money in the world, that won't stop them from cutting corners or being generally incompetent.
The punishment for failing to secure password data should be far more severe than it currently is.

I still don't know how it happened (I'm fairly tech/password conscious) But I had some fucker from Kazakhstan sign into my steam a couple times. I can only assume he downloaded a ton of games and then set the account to offline mode, I don't leave my card info or anything on my account so I don't think he was after that

He didn't touch my account's trade/items either. Still have no idea wtf he was doing.

one time someone was selling north face jackets on my ebay account

Well, end of the story was they bought something off ebay for like 10 bux, I send out emails to paypal and the seller a couple minutes later, got the money back, and the seller never sent the wares to whoever it was. I still have the email with the name and address.

Good luck following that rabbit hole.

If you have gmail you can double entropy with their + shit.

Base: [email protected]
Your DeviantArt account: [email protected]

DA will accept it, and gmail will redirect it to [email protected]. So people can't even reverse lookup your account without know the garbage after the +.

I do this on all my important accounts for that exact reason to avoid reverse lookup or something like "this email is already in use".

There was this really weird period in my life where I guess someone was just really obsessed with getting into my steam, but I use a password safe and let it generate my passwords, so even if they somehow got in, they didn't really do anything because ALL of my accounts had different passwords, and I never save my credit card credentials into anything.

I do this too. It's fun when I have to remember the identifier for a website I haven't used in years, but the system usually works out in the end.

>>387429080
Normally what a hacker does is they grab a database full of encrypted passwords, buy a shitton of graphics cards, and tell the GPUs to work with the CPU to try brute force or dictionary attacks. If they succeed, they usually have your username, password, and if they're lucky, your email address. Then, they try the email address/password combination into something else, because 90% of users will use the same password for everything.

I don't know why they don't jump straight to your email address though. Maybe because most emails alert your phone if you log in with a strange IP/OS, so they stick to lowkey things like your MMO account.

If your password is made out of english words, it's not as unbrutforceable as you think.
If it's a very long string of random characters that you managed to remember then good for you I guess.
Mangling your password is still better than blindly reusing them everywhere, but you might as well move on to password managers, because what you are doing is literally security through obscurity. If some shitty site stores your shit in plaintext and gets leaked, your secret is out. And well, if this trick is popular enough, it will get added to a standard list of things password cracking tools try. For example, people used to think that doubling the amount of words makes your password longer and therefore more secure, like "cockcockloverlover420420" and now checking for this behavior is an option in any password cracking program.

Access is the #1 weakness of any form of security. If someone for example has access to snoop on your use of a program, or tamper/gain access to files that would otherwise be secured by it you have bigger problems.

What do you mean "hackable"?
If your pc gets compromised, they'll have your passwords anyway since you either type them from memory and that will get intercepted with a keylogger or store them in a browser, most likely unencrypted. This is not a defense against that, this is a way to easily generate passwords with high entropy that you don't have to remember and don't get fucked by websites that leak your data.

There was a retarded oversight on steam that is probably still not fixed. When someone tries to initiate voice chat with you, steam hands over your ip to establish the VoIP connection before you accept the call. Script kiddies can catch the connection and your IP and then DDoS you. This alarmingly immature sack of shit in a group I'm in who somehow had access to a botnet decided to do so to me for several hours for shits and giggles.

Point out the exploit and the retards will comically flock in to blame you for it.

I got fucked 1 time and it was my own fault.

Got a call from a 1800 number saying they were my cell phone provider and that there would be outages in the morning the following days. They wanted me to verify that I was the owner of the account so they sent me a text message with a code. (This was to reset my password). I was stupid (was in the middle of playing a game, but hardly an excuse) and just read it back to them robotically. Right at the last few characters, I realized what was happening and hung up, but I had already said the entire thing.

The next 2 hours were a battle over securing my account and removing names they were changing and adding two-step verification. The managed to get into my Paypal and tried to send $300 to another e-mail, but Paypal luckily didn't allow it to go through.

Once they had access to my account, they were able to use an online service through my provider that lets you view text messages, so they were able to reset passwords at will. It took me a long time to convince my cellphone provider to remove the service from my account.

Spent the remaining hours of the day resetting and adding 2-step verification to anything they could fuck me over on.

It was an awful day due to me being a dumb ass for 12 seconds.

Clicking around and I figured they probably got into my email first then saw an opportunity with WoW. Wasn't a huge deal for me. I didn't put anything private on that blizzard account and the email was used for signing into shady sites anyway so none of my info was at stake. I found it mildly interesting and entertaining than scary.

No, closest I got was giving a guy I'd known for like a year a secondary account password to help me mule some shit in D2 and he tried to log into my main account several times immediately to get my shit, then dumped my mule shit on the ground in the game and deleted all the mules to spite me and deleted me. Game didn't expire so I just had to sit around for like an hour and a half in that game waiting for my friend to get out of classes and home so he could help me get my shit onto the characters again.

Someone found my facebook years ago, but thats because I put my name and town on the given fields in Steam like other quasi-normies.

It gave me a good spoop, but lately I've gotten really paranoid about web security. Despite being basically computer illiterate for a few years before wising up, I have so many skeletons left in my closet and I can't keep track of them.

I've managed to close duplicate e-shopping accounts, but I'm having a lot of trouble with forums right now.

I had my WoW account taken over by gold farmers. They used my account to hold money so I went from like 10k to over a million during BC era. Not even counting the misc. materials either. The oddest part, though, was they didn't use my paladin to farm, instead they made a new hunter, so I had a damn near level capped hunter on a different server from this too. Had I waited a day I'm sure it would have been level capped.

Not vidya related, but I also had my CC info stolen. I told my bank about it and they reversed all charges within the last 5 days from when it happened, including the times I ate out during my vacation.
