Nah, 2017 has been pretty great for games. Every year has its gems and its busts. /v/ just tends to exaggerate the latter for its own amusement. I mean, where's the fun in a game selling a respectable amount of copies and being generally well received? That shit doesn't make very good ammunition for the console wars, but at least we'll always have dead horses to beat such as Tortanic and Blunderborn.

I am not sure if its a decline in quality as much of a dilution of quality. Overall I would say there are more 'good' games today then in the past but nothing about them really stands out due to games trying to do too many things at once.

No they've been getting better. Apart from a the loss of a few trivial features, Skyrim is a net improvement over Morrowind.

The problem is that this leads to a much more popular and mainstream game, which breeds resentment among the Morrobeards who long for the days when Elder Scrolls was their secret club with unappealing graphics and unintuitive systems to keep the hated normals away.

I think the focus on having a cinematic experience in AAA (Bioshock Infinite, Uncharted) titles fucked things up quite a bit. Bland open world games (Batman AC, Final Fantasy XV, Assassins Creed) games being too bloated, killsteaks in multiplayer, Activison in general is cancer, Bunjie committing suicide and making a bad franchise, micro transactions, the rise of MOBAS and dumb shit like PUBG, twitch, Ubisoft taking care of woman's rights before their audience, etc.

That's kinda tough to say because games have changed so much over the last 20 years in so many ways that it's really quite subjective.

I would say that the role of the publisher and of advertising in game development has become more and more central to the success of a game and that this hasn't been good for the creativity or consumer friendliness of games.

Overall quality however is too broad of a metric to gauge objectively.

Yes they have. Games cost more to produce nowadays due to voice acting and having to have stupidly good graphics so they must sell more copies to break even, and so they decide to make games appeal to a broader audience in order to sell more games. The big nail in the vidya coffin has been DLC, which allows companies to earn big amounts of money with minimal effort involved. That's the general explanation.
I don't think video games are worse than they used to be 20 years ago, per se, I just think that most games are just "ok", really good video games are harder to find, especially if they're so called triple AAA a games.
Source: My ass, but Superbunnyhop released a video recently explaining how some companies evade taxes and earn profits almost entirely by selling DLC, so there's that.

Actually, I would argue that the true nail in the coffin, the point of no return once it's done becoming mainstream is micro-transactions in full price games.

DLC is bad, but at least there is SOME effort there and it doesn't outright encourage developers to make the game worse and less fun to play. Micro-transactions do though (not to mention requiring even less effort than DLC) and we've been seeing them creep more and more into games that you had to pay money to buy in the first place.
