I always had this head canon that humans were more apathetic or oblivious to the plight of the animals and that Robotnik was more or less just a typical industrial developer back when I first played Sonic 1 as a kid. Instead he's more or less wholly evil and everyone in the world is against him.

I know the series has greatly departed from that headcanon being even remotely close to true but sometimes I had been right over what we wound up getting. I liked the idea of Robotnik getting more and more obsessed with the power of the emeralds and getting rid of his "gopher in the back yard" Sonic problem as things progressed to the point he was making space stations just to murder him. I saw a video about something like this recently. Years ago, consumer media industries used to still be led by crusty old men in charge, but it was crusty old men that, when presented with a new idea said "Fuck, I don't know. Yeah I know. Honestly, I never had problems with the game. When I got it I was expecting to fall through the ground with any wrong tilt of the stick constantly. The glitches were actually rare for me unless I was actively looking for them. It was nice to have a story that took itself seriously and went places, some of the grey skies in cutscenes really painted a nice moody atmosphere that they were going for. Finding shortcuts with Sonic and Shadow were fun and so was conserving energy with Silver to make long jumps possible. Some of the town missions were ridiculous but in a good way, hilarious challenges or ring/enemy counts. It has the core of a very fun game but it just needed a little more polish obviously.
