I like House and I like The Kings and Followers. Most of the other factions need to get their shit together or fuck off.

NCR is probably the best for the nation as a whole, so long as a nation of equal or greater power directly contests the NCR for control of the North American continent. The NCR's biggest flaw is it's tendency to keep expanding when it clearly can't adequately defend its own territory, so having a competing state would stop its borders from growing. The Legion's presence made it abundantly clear that the NCR doesn't fuck with nations that have considerable power, so as long as this other state doesn't wage war.

Besides that, the Legion would fall apart without Caesar in a few years and House only gives a fuck about the Strip and could care about the other wastelanders. Independence is just asking to get absolutely fucked by another faction of the wasteland, most notably the Brotherhood or the NCR since they have the tech and numbers.

The Followers are in the best place in a Legion ending.

That's libertarianism taken to its logical end in a small environment, where distance is not enough of a detriment to overcome monopolies. Eventually, one person accumulates all the wealth and essentially becomes king. He controls the city because its his property, and therefore, it is his right to do with as he pleases. The people living there are only allowed to inhabit it because they assent to his terms, which in this case is his autocracy. The only way you could argue that it isn't libertarianism is if you assert that libertarianism requires the wealthy to hamstring themselves and allow competition to exist, despite it being against their own interests, in the name of fair game.

You're right, new vegas is a study in the outcome of unfettered libertarianism. Given enough time, a society of any size practicing pure libertarianism (or any completely free market society) will end up with oligarch autocracy, as the barriers to total monopoly are slowly eroded by a steady consolidation of wealth and political power.

Capitalism only works in the public interest if it's contained within an ethical framework. Things like vigorous antitrust, ethical consumer and worker protections, and an economic model where private gains are reasonably enjoyed by workers as well as executives are not natural to capitalism (they are socialist devices), but we see them as important parts of a sustainable capitalist model.

I agree with everything you said, which isn't surprising, because I don't think New Vegas was attempting to deconstruct or critique any of the various ideologies espoused. Instead, it ceded the premise of all of its constituents' beliefs and posed the hypothetical question of "which would be best for this situation." The players were presented with the different societies, both their strengths and their weaknesses on display, and asked them to decide for themselves which would be most capable of bringing about a particular end. My only criticism of the game is that the "ends" were essentially various aspects of modern America, the free market of House, the idea of democracy embodied in the NCR, the superpower (with an end goal of being a new Rome for its successors to emulate ala the Founding Fathers) of the Legion, and the rugged-individualism of Yes Man. The premise of recreating modern society, reinvented for the new world, was asserted as the most desirable (and the only) goal and the plot played from there.

To be honest I wouldn't side with any of them. As soon as I got shot in the head I would have considered myself lucky and just chilled in Goodsprings, started a family with Sunny Smiles. I'd renovate one of those abandoned houses, pull some scrap from nearby and fixed it up nicely, start my own farm and hunt Geckos in my free time. Sell the meat and Hides for a little extra money on the side.

Maybe even have a few kids with Sunny, grow old, leave the house and farm to my kids, and died a happy man without ever having to worry about getting embroiled in that shit.

Benny likely would have been caught trying to sneak into the fort, most likely executed. The platinum chip? Taken by Caesar's legion. He would have sent a few legionaries into the weather station to destroy the Securitron army. They probably wouldn't be able to get past security, so Caesar would get pissed off and give up, focusing on more pressing matters.

Before he can assault Hoover Damn he dies of his brain tumor. NCR spies relay this information to their superiors. The government continues to mass troops at Hoover Dam. Unfortunately for them, they come under attack from multiple legion positions. Raiding parties strangle NCR supply lines from California, but they are ultimately caught and killed by NCR. The arrival of the Desert Rangers signifies the end of Caesar's Legion. The legion just can't compete with the black armor rangers. Chief Hanlon's plan to have the Rangers step in while the NCR retreats fails as Legion forces aren't as organizes as before. They are easily killed and routed from Hoover Damn by the Desert Rangers but not before inflicting heavy casualties to NCR forces.

Occupiers at Nelson annihilate camp Forlorn Hope and occupy it, but General Oliver leads a team of Rangers into the Legates camp where he is promptly shot in the head by a 50. MG roung and killed.

The legion, losing their last commander, Rout from Hoover Dam. The NCR pursues them.

Meanwhile on the strip, the Omertas attack NCR positions, but NCR Soldiers and Securitron peacekeepers quell their attempted insurection. Remember that they aren't supplied with all their extra weapons because the Courier never retrieved the stolen parts from the fiends, and they also can't deploy their Chlorine gas because it was never obtained by the courier. The Strip is heavily damaged, but the NCR secures it.
Freeside is less fortunate. The kings riot with the locals and attempt to storm the gates to the Strip, also killing or severely beating any NCR squatters in Freeside. The followers attempt to give medical aid, but they simply don't have the supplies, and end up just giving basic first aid to any wounded in the fighting. Many people die, but the strip calms down. The Kings are killed by NCR soldiers, and the ones that aren't make a run for it.
The Fiends storm Camp McCarren en masse and attempt to force the gates. Many NCR soldiers are lost in the fighting, but they hold against the hoard. First Recon Distinguishes themselves during the fighting, giving long range support to ground soldiers and killing key fiend leaders or the ones using advanced weapons like plasma rifles or laser RCWs. McCarren holds, barely. During the fighting the monorail is sabatoged by legion spies. Silas is killed by an unknown assailant.
The Great Khans assault Hoover Dam and fail with the legion due to poor leadership and bad planning. Attempting to attack the NCR from straight up the road, they are cut off by the Garrison holding out at the ruins of Boulder City. They kill the entire Garrison, but not before the NCR at the dam are alerted to their approach. Rangers at the back line simply shoot the Khans before they can approach.
NCR continues to hold it's position around Primm and at Mojave Outpost. They are largeley uneffected by the fighting. The powder gangers and escaped convicts continue to hold the town.

The citizens attempt a push as they are running low on food, but they fail due to the better armed prisoners. Most of the are killed.
Camp golf sees heavy fighting and sustains casualties, but holds. The misfits are all killed save for Mags, who barely survives. She is wounded and retires from the NCR military with a purple heart.
After Hoover Dam is secure, NCR turns it's attention towards the legion forces still on the Western side of the Colorado river. They muster an attack force to retake Camp Forlorn Hope and Nelson. Legion are routed from their position as Elite Desert Rangers pick off legionaires inside the camp. Legion retreats to Cottonwood Cove where they make their last stand against approaching NCR forces. NCR surrounds the legion soldiers there and begins a long siege. Legion eventually decide to retreat back across the river. They make their retreat late one night before NCR can react and pursue. They get into boats and make their way down the river. NCR secures the camp.
The NCR secures a pyrrhic victory at the second battle of hoover dam as they have sustained massive casualties, the infrastructure of their objectives have suffered heavy damage, they still have many enemies in the Mojave, and Caesar's legion is still across the river. They begin planning to take the fort, but this will take many years before it is feasible.

Meanwhile, I chill in goodsprings having whiskey with Sunny Smiles, trying to flirt with her, inviting her out to shoot geckos with me as a date. Everything works out.

No one would have fucked with the boomers and the brotherhood would have assaulted Hoover Damn through Scorpion Gulch attacking from the North West, blowing through the gate and taking control of the plant, killing all the NCR inside. They wouldn't have been able to hold it for long though. Once the NCR got everything settled they would have re-taken the plant, routing the brotherhood inside and pursuing them to Hidden Valley where they likely would have made their last stand inside.
