That's not the issue. A lot of friends drink and smoke while playing games. The problem comes from the people who make it the thing that they do when they're there instead of just a tertiary thing in the background. For dedicated fans it's just something to do while enjoying the game and hanging out with friends. The problem is the priority of actions and why fanbases devolve. For the most dedicated fans the priority is the game or media they're gathered around with social activities coming second. The entire thing becomes an issue when people stop giving a shit about the game and are just there to get attention and socialize. That's fine for those people, but it doesn't align with what the hardcore initial fans want so they feel left out and ostracized from a hobby they were the core group of. Again, nobody is in the wrong, everyone is entitled to how they want to enjoy said thing, but it does suck for the initial fans because all they want is another group that loves thing as much as they do, but they end up getting drowned with normies who want to enjoy other aspects and make it harder for the core group to enjoy what they want.

Stuff like video games and anime are really easy to enjoy. There will always be people who like a hobby x despite not putting the same time investment into them, especially if its something easy to get into like games. As time goes on things tend to get more popular which means that there will be around people who are not as much into it as you are. All fan communities are under constant change, nothing stays the same forever, and the sooner you accept this the easier your life will be. Concentrate on the hobby, not on the people around it as it is not something you can control.

Or try miniature games or something if you want a hobby which will probably never be non-nerdy. Or just get into something actually difficult to appreciate unlike video games or anime.

The same is true of video games, but the effect on the industry as a whole is still undeniable.
The vast majority of people aren't willing to put in the time to learn games like Total War or Xcom, let alone some of the deeper grand strategy and 4x games.
But as soon as the hobby turns from a niche source of entertainment to a mass media, the market dynamics switch from trying to appeal to their niche towards trying to appeal to everyone.

Don't assume that anime is magically secure from the same dynamics.

Who didn't expect video games to be a pretty normal thing by 2010s? Almost every kid played some sort of video games in the 90s, now these people are adults and I don't think that the kids after that have been any different. Of course the social stigma would eventually vanish. Same goes for anime to a lesser extent. Your hobbies are normie hobbies now even if they didn't use to be, entertainment is one of the most normal things to like in life.
