I've found it helps a lot when running antivirus scans, searching for files and just general responsiveness. Everything I run off my SSD runs better. There's really no reason not to use an SSD for a boot drive. If you're forced to choose between one or the other I probably wouldn't get an SSD just to have a faster boot drive, especially if storage is a concern, but in my situation I get good use out of it.

I use both. Newer games I store on my SSD (I have one for my OS and one for games), and games I do not play as much or would not benefit from a SSD I store on my larger HDD. Works out well.

I'm poor. I just upgraded from 5200 RPM to 7200 RPM at least.

It's easier to tell when they're failing so I have more time to backup the data if I have not already.
