Why do so many people hate Nier Automata even though it was an

From what I see the people heralding Automata as some sort of master-piece that can never be topped have never played another Taro game before and are not used to his style of story telling. Personally, I walked away from Automata feeling a little disappointed. Automata's cast was just not good, and it had the most "phoned-in" gameplay Platinum has ever done. Overall I liked the game, but not as much as the first game event though it has better core-gameplay mechanics, and I don't think it's a master-piece.

There are a ton of westaboos on 4chan who hate everything Japanese. They think it's funny or something.

There was actally a lot of loving discussion on the game right when it came out. Same with breath of the wild. It's just when something gets popular people on 4chan will shit on it. They probably haven't even played the game. One of my biggest pet peeves about this site is the irrational hatred and negativity

It's a lot of people who haven't played the game, see 2B fan art and just assume that the entire game is based around fanservice, then they start pinning terms like "weeb game" to it.
There's also a group of people who bought it for Platinum and didn't get what they wanted, although I can understand their point of view. This is coming from someone who's played Drakengard, Nier and Automata.

Personally i'm the same as some people her, i don't understand the hate, the game is by asolutely no means bad. The problem i do have though is people calling it some kind of underrated masterpiece, it's not. It's a good game that has a certain approach of story telling that can confuse newcomers, but it doesn't need to be called a masterpice just because it does things differently. My only grip with the game is the gameplay (kinda weak for platinum) and difficulty balance (which is really weird, even in the difficulty choice) but the rest is perfectly okay.

I disagree. I only ever ended up liking W101 and dislike every other game of theirs I've played, including Vanquish, MGR, Bayonetta and Star Fox Zero. They were better when they were still making PS2 games.

Peobably because it's hailed as being deep when the plot is actually pretty shallow. Ì still liked the game and plot a lot, but it was in the way I like DBZ. The moment to moment storytelling and action is great, but it falls apart under any level of scrutiny.

It's kind of heading towards the fate of Undertale where people dislike it more because of the reaction it got than any flaw with the game itself.

Because Nier Automata is the worst Platinum game since Korra, and heavily overrated.

Don't get me wrong, the story's fantastic, the dialogue's great and the voice acting in English is surprisingly good, but that doesn't excuse all of the glaring problems the game has that reviewers and people on here alike just seem to brush under the rug. I ended up enjoying Taro's contributions MUCH more than Platinum's gameplay in Automata, and from somebody who's never played any Taro game before that's pretty telling

I played Drakengard and NieR first and I disagree with you entirely. Automata blows the other games out of the water in gameplay, music, story and characters. Yes even characters. While none of them are as detailed as Kaine, I think they feel much more authentic and believable as personalities than the NieR cast did. A big part of that honestly is just that the dialogues are much more realistic and down to earth whereas it often would sound awkward or straight up cringy in NieR, the characters in that game are just too on the nose about what they are thinking and feeling.

And while I wouldn't go calling the game a masterpiece because it could be improved in many obvious ways, the things that I like about it outweigh the bad stuff enough that I'd say it is in my top 3 favorite games of the current gen.

This is the best post in the thread. I too came from other Taro games and knew what to expect. It was a solid experience on about the same levels of the other games that everyone already dumps on for everything minus narrative and OST. Disagree entirely. 9S goes through this philosophical questioning and then just spergs out and throws is 100% out the window without ever even focusing his hatred. Yet he's supposed to be clever and smart. Want revenge? Sure, I got you. Want revenge even against those that helped you and you are aware of this? Yeah... nah. The platinum mechanics barely even make a difference because every enemy breaks out of combos after 3 hits anyway and the games difficulty curve is completely stupid because of the enemy level ups that mean one robot dies in 2 seconds but a robot a street block away that looks the exact same takes 15 minutes. The game also has way less memorable bosses because half of them are shump segments that behave the exact same

Nier's world is more interesting because it's a bit more compact and there's more actual setpieces because it's only a post apocalypse and not a post post apocalypse. Both games have annoying sidequests but the ones in nier generally had more interesting dialogue or world building and were an interesting way to tie the player into the role of the protagonist because both nier AND the player know that the sidequests are stupid time wasting bullshit but niers such a nice guy he's gonna do them anyway. Majority of the sidequests 2B and 9S have no fucking reason to do them at all and fast travel in a way makes them MORE annoying because now it's not even an experience to do them, you just warp to a location and collect/murder some things and warp back to the guy. The game also somehow has less enemy variety than the first game even though this one's big selling point is "the combat is better" which is just fucking inexcusable

They suck. They aren't that good for a shump and the game uses them way too often.

nier's story at it's core is extremely simple: "how far would you go to save your only family". this is a really sympathetic backstory anyone can relate with and it makes all the fucked up stuff that happens as a result actually have an emotional impact. in automata the closest thing to an actual story is "9S and 2B want to FUCK eachother, but a bunch of stuff they don't care about keeps getting in the way of this" which is inherently more self absorbed, and combined with the general lack of focus the games story has (there's no real mystery or coherant beginning/middle/end structure in automata, just loosely connected scenes that all tie into a central theme) it's hard to really get invested

They're fine I guess, but the fact that 2B, a character I spent a good dozen hours playing as can be killed off and I don't care because she's replaced by A2, a character that's pretty much the exact same, really says a lot. As does the fact that the game doesn't really have a coherent antagonist because adam and eve barely do anything, manha ripoff machine AI barely does anything and then the games final boss is the fucking credits. It doesn't help that literally every single machine good guy is a gag character impossible to take seriously, even in serious moments like when the little baby machines stab themselves all at once with tiny baby knives.

>Music and visuals
automata runs like shit compared to the first game. I don't know why but it consistently has framerate issues in every version that the first game just didn't have. the lack of variety in environments doesn't help either. As for the music even the developers think the first game's soundtrack was better, which is why they used the same melodies in the background of a bunch of tracks in automata.

The endings in this game are bullshit. in the first game every single ending felt like it had closure, while each one revealed more info you could genuinely stop at A or even B and feel satisfied without having to get C/D after getting all the weapons. In automata ending A doesn't explain shit besides "2B and 9S really like eachother, also machines have feelings" which is something you knew an hour into the game. Ending B is the exact same ending again but with some minor details added, Endings C and D are evangelion levels of abstract nonsense and ending E literally has nothing to do with the plot at all, the pods just shoot the credits and magically everything is ambigiously ok

in nier this was actually a novel idea that tied into the game and characters, because if you/nier wanted to give kaine, the only character that has a chance of a good ending, to turn out ok you had to give up everything. in automata you delete your save because you're already finished with the game and a robot guilt trips you into, there's no benefit to you for doing it or not and it feels like they really blatantly wanted to include this just because the first game was really infamous for it

The DLC was more visually interesting take on "just fight a bunch of enemies" and the way it connects replicant and gestalt niers together is a neat bit of story building. the automata DLC is just even more combat arenas when that's the entire game already and some gag boss fights

the only thing automata really did better was having weapon stories again
