I've never really liked the Batman/Asscreed combat in the first place. Oddly enough I thought Black Flag was amazing.

It's also the non-existent level-design, the shitty ennemy variety, the long-ass boring quests (both main and sidequest)...

It was a 3/10 at best.

I liked the game but the combat is definitely mediocre and if you do lots of sidequests (not even all of them) you almost always end up being overleveled.

So between the balancing and the combat I definitely enjoyed it less than 1 and 2. Although to be fair, I'm not exactly big on open world games so I might be biased.

The biggest problem with The Witcher 3 is how bland and sterile it's giant cardboard map is.

Soon enough you will realize that there is nothing to interact in the map and that it's there just as space between points A and B.

Sidequests are nothing interesting if you are not lucky to be in that one big sidequest that is actually well written.

The batman vision "follow the red dots" sidequests get really old after the #1,928,192,819,289 one.

At around half way it you will either drop it completely or power through the main story just to finish it.

I struggled with the sponginess of the enemies. Even on the easiest difficulty, lots of enemies have more HP than is absolutely necessary.

Here's a protip; developers. If an enemy isn't a boss and takes more than 4-5 hits at the appropriate level and equipment sets, it's too spongy. The same rule applies to your character as long as it isn't built to be a tank, and tanks should only take about double the punishment. Casters should take about half.

Skyrim is better because it's actually fun to explore random places in the world. Fallout 4 is even better at it.

Witcher 3 open world aesthetically and by scale is probably the best open world made. However the gameplay design around it is piss poor, never realizing the potential.

For example if you go anywhere but south when you're dropped in the open world you run into level locked areas...and by the time you're done with the main quest and come back everything is easy. You go into a cave or point of interest and there's no item you can equip or use because the best items in the game are the witcher sets.

I'm at Kaer Morhen and haven't experienced damage sponge human enemies that take 30 hits to kill yet.

Pro tip: if you press 'I' it takes you to your inventory, where you can equip stronger weapons by right clicking on the weapon that you want. Equipping stronger weapons lets you kill things in less hits. I know, the game does a pretty bad job of showing you how to do this, but I think most people figured it out regardless.

in botw you're doing your own exploring, finding cool looking spots on the map, getting to vantage points, all with minimal pre-placed map markers or instruction
in TW3 I'm basically doing a glorified checklist, hunting ? markers on the map, with very little stuff outside of that. In the first area (White Orchard?) I found the gryphon's nest before the story told me to find it, and Geralt had nothing to say about it and I couldn't interact with it until the game told me to go there and check it out

This quest wasn't given to me by anybody. There was no question mark, or exclamation mark. I just found it there. Tell me again how there's nothing to discover?
Once you're out of the tutorial world you can just find shit that is linked to other quests without having the quest. You can kill the cursed druid tree before ever having the quest about the crones, and doing it out of sequence like that changes the way the quest progresses.
You can complete most hunts contracts just by stumbling on the monster in the wild and killing it.

The game is flawed at its core, at a fundamental design level. You were "feeling feels" because you were presented with a narrative, not because you had any meaningful involvement with the game. You would have had the same reaction having watched the quest on youtube, which is why its fucking bad game design. Games can do more than replicate the experience of having a narrative presented to you, that is not what immerses a player.

Basics are similar, but that surface-level comparison is where it ends. Souls games do a lot more with those same simple mechanics, there's a fair amount of room for experimentation and builds that play very differently. Witcher's combat falls completely flat and lacks the same level depth after you look past the surface level, you play largely the same way with the same set of shallow tools from hour 10 to 100.

It was just a random tertiary quest that you find on the side of the road. The closest thing you get to that in botw is finding an npc fighting a goblin and when you kill the goblin he says thanks.
If you want to talk about bigger quests with different endings based on choices you make, we can talk about the bloody baron quest and how one path leads to his wife turning into a water hag and him hanging himself, while the other results in a village's children being eaten by witches but at leas the baron didn't suicide.

The combat would be a complete bore if it weren't for signs. Then it becomes just simply mediocre. It's also poorly balanced. There is no point in trying to engage a difficult enemy multiple levels higher than you because it's going to take you half an hour to kill it. Certain enemies don't have clear indicators for hitting you. Human enemies are practically never challenging.

But honestly, the meat of the game is the story and atmosphere, and those are good enough that I played through it all.

W3 pretends dialogue choices make an RPG, that's all there is to choose. You're always Geralt, you always have the same personality and backstory, the "builds" are laughably shallow and play too similarly, so dialogue is all that's left. Skyrim still has better "builds" and gives the player more freedom to actually role-play outside the scripted story and dialogue.

Again, its not a good RPG, its just a better RPG than W3.
