Xbox only had Halo1 and Halo2. Halo2 has enough hours to it to beat all PS2 games, but melee has more, and more fun.
PS2 has most games, but not the same charm as nintendo.
Gamecube is what I always go back to think about when I think the best/funniest games.

I still play melee to this day with the same 3 friends. Replayed Zelda WW last summer.

Look m8, Nintendo fucked up with the wii. The gamecube, like evry nintendo console before it had the Standard (back then) ''easy to play, hard to master'' -game design theory that nintendo had. This is why games like f-zero gx and sunshine and melee etc have such complex and deep game mechanics and game engines. Nintendo completely dropped that with the wii and even more witht he wii U. (For comparison, Super mario 3D world only has you running on 8 directions while super mario 64 that came out in 1996 had like, 360).
I have always played on nintendo console all my life. I honestly think that i am the biggest nintendo fan on /v/. Anyway, i dropped them from 2009-2017. what changed in 2017? Breath of the wild came out. And it has that old formula that the old nintendo games used to have. This is why people have been saying ''nintendo is back!'' Because it shows in their games and priorities right now. I than kiwata for everything he has done, but ever since he passed away, nintendo has been on a rise.

Much of the Gamecube hype was suffering.

I remember how prior to the Gamecube's launch Nintendo very prominently were promoting the Broadband modem which was supposed to be used for widespread online play...but ended up doing absolutely shit fucking all with it.

And then there were the suggestions that the High Speed Port would be used for an Xbox style hard drive (a small credit card sized one). Instead, a massive Game Boy Player ended up going into it which felt very disappointing (well I guess these days it's pretty cool but back then it didn't feel too special).

Aside from Melee, many of the follow-ups to N64 games ended up inferior. Although Metroid Prime was a really nice surprise. And a few hidden gems appeared like Eternal Darkness. Capcom also promised big things for the Gamecube, like the good old Capcom Five, but eventually nothing but the underbaked P.N.03 ended up exclusive so it felt like a kick in the balls. Also, Capcom promised to remake Resident Evil 2, 3 and Code Veronica in the style of REmake. But all they did was end up releasing straight ports of those games for utterly obscene prices ($40 USD).

I wanted to like the Gamecube, I was there on launch day. But it ended up suffering. It's nice to reminisce now though. But morale was low when the Gamecube section ended up tucked away at the very back of Gamestop

I think that we will never reclaim that 2004-7 era of amazing games

Part of the reason is that the 3D was new and still had room for innovation, and continued to do so

But unlike in the 2D era, we havent transitioned to something.. higher, and now it, the 3D era is stagnating

I think we would have felt that too with the 2D era if gaming were more prominent in the 2D era and that era had lasted longer, hell you can even see it after the fact, look at all the 2D indie games that are samey bullshit now

That would be what the 2d era would be like, exactly that, if we hadnt transitioned to 3d

We need true virtual reality to truly revitalize gaming, but that cant happen over the span of a few years, it's too big a leap compared to the last generations

Yeah it had more than the N64, but also a lot less "exclusive" third party support. N64 still had its Body Harvests and World Driver Championships even if it didn't get much of what the PS1 had.

Unfortunately a lot of the Gamecube's third party support felt half hearted. A lot of sloppy ports which were less jaggy than the PS2 version but inferior in other ways (extra slowdown, reduced lighting, cut online play). Also you'd usually have to wait an extra week for the Gamecube version to come on, while PS2 and Xbox owners would already be playing...
