I just finished the first chapter of Blood, so let's have a retro FPS thread.

What are some games you guys can recommend? The more obscure and good, the better.

I'm intending to play Soldier of Fortune since I read it's got a novel gore system.

Though the original campaign of Quake is very good, most people only seem to know the game for its multiplayer. So play the original single player campaign if you haven't, it's great.

But if you have, there's an incredible mod called Arcane Dimensions that an absolute must-play, and very recently, an add-on for Arcane Dimensions called the Forgotten Sepulcher was released, an enormous map that an absolute 10/10.

Use the sourceport Quakespasm.

If you've not played Doom 64, it's a great game, and through the use of a port called Doom64EX, you can play the whole game on PC with various enhancements.

There is also a GZDoom remake of Doom 64, however, in a graphical enhancement mod called Brutal Doom 64. It boasts some cut content, a GZDoom supported lighting system and other things. Unlike Brutal Doom, this mod does not seek to radically change Doom 64's gameplay.

Unreal Gold is such a fantastic, underappreciated gem. I almost feel like it's a shame the game went mostly multiplayer oriented later on, but they're great multiplayer games so I guess it works out.

By the way, if you enjoyed Unreal Gold's original campaign, try Return to Na Pali Ultimate edition. It merges RTNP levels with cut Beta ones so resulting campaign is about 2/3 of original's lenght. There are intersections between levels and a lot of cut music which is also very good.

It's for Unreal Tournament, though.

Do you use M+KB or some controller when playing games like Quake?
>>
>>387211646
Give it time, older 3D games generally have fairly dated control schemes but you should be able to adjust to them assuming you actually grew up with them and aren't a turbo casual

Also what that other guy said, most older console FPS games control amazingly due to their lack of limitations on the player. Zipping around and gunning down a fuckton of enemies in Doom or leading shots and jumping around in Quake or Unreal feels goddamn amazing.

In regards to the SH games, some of them (2 onward?) have a movement option that changes the tank controls into the more contemporary movement style that's used in today's third person games. This is particularly helpful with a controller (tank controls are fine on a KB+M imo).

You've probably noticed it before, I only picked up on it the other day starting my first play through of SH3.

You need to play more than "a bit". It's supremely challenging and requires pretty serious item management so you don't run out of mana. Hexen 2 is literally the Dark Souls of FPS games. This review sums it up perfectly.

Chiming in to say that RF1 is quite overrated here imo. The game is decent, but kinda boring after a while. The vehicle sections fail to keep things fresh and have the weirdest controls. I don't care about the story in this games but in RF1 it's barely there. Bosses aren't well designed, too. The game has great gunplay for most weapons and good to great levels though. Also blowing shit up it's fun. All in all a good game, but not as good as I expected.
>>
>>387215721
Hexen 2 is really fun, but can be super confusing without a guide.
There is a part at the third chapter (egypt) where you have a puzzle that requires you to step on the correct blocks, and there are multiple patterns to choose from (patterns are on the wall earlier in stage) but each time you try a pattern, if you choose wrong then you will be teleported away and have to try again. The correct pattern is randomly generated each time you fail, so expect to be stuck there for upwards to hours.

the reason why quake 2 feels a bit dull is mostly because it's drawn out series of connected maps as opposed to quake 1 where each map is a single level with it's own themes and gimmicks so it constantly feels fresh level by level

This honestly sounds like a pain, it looks like the took the maze like aspects of Doom 1 and multiplied them 100 fold. I've never been huge on the more maze-like, confusing stages that force you to search high and low to figure out what to do in a game.

Like I liked Turok 1 a lot but then 2 introduced more nonsense to make the games more annoying IMO. 1's stages had a better balance of searching for keys and moving through new environments while gunning down enemies.

It's not bad, but like Shadow Warrior, it fails to properly merge the old with the new. It mixes both without really balancing either so a lot of sections are very old school but don't handle well the more modern mechanics.
Also I hated the two weapon system, which can transform into other weapon mods. I never knew which weapon I was shooting since I'd have to base it nearly solely on the reticule changing. I'd still want a Hard Reset 2 but not if it's just more levels.

you ever worked at a game company? Even in the 00s they were already segmenting work, the guy that did the textures or the AI or the sound effects obviously never seen the map that the map creators used for internal testing. This was a time when focus groups werent a thing, and is part of the reason why gaming was much harder back in the day.

Hell no, everyone plays the game with WASD+mouse. Not even the most hardcore /vr/fags play with WASD+arrowkeys only.
The only time I play keyboard only is when testing shit while on my laptop, because arrow-key aiming is easier than using the trackpad.

Oh. Looks like I need to reinstall. I always felt like it was cheating to use wasd+mouse with Doom, especially since shooting doesn't take height into account so you don't need to look up and down. Hell, I beat Blood with arrow keys just a few months back when I got in a bundle or something.
>>
>>387225430
>Also I got a 'DOCS' mod. Not sure what that is about..
Quake just thinks any folder in your Quake folder is a mod.

Anyway the the easiest way to take a screenshot would probably be to just run it through Steam. It looks like Quakespasm saves screenshots as tga when you use the screenshot command for some reason.

If you want to set the texture mode to nearest, however, it's very simple to do.

Open the console (press the tilde key) and type

gl_texturemode gl_nearest_mipmap_linear
If you want to change back to the blurry textures, type
gl_texturemode gl_linear_mipmap_linear
>>
>>387225558
If you use a modern source port like (G)ZDoom then you can turn on vertical mouse aiming, crouching, jumping, etc. I honestly prefer playing with vertical aiming on and auto-aim off (which is how the game normally shoots enemies at higher elevations) because it requires more accuracy when shooting and it's useful being able to look up and down at times, and I use jumping as a means to save time if I'm backtracking and want to take a quick shortcut by jumping instead of taking the long way around for an area I've already finished. As long as you don't use vertical aiming, jumping, or crouching to skip a part of a level (such as jumping over a waist-high wall you normally couldn't get over) or to sequence-break a level then you aren't cheating, but if you still feel like you're making the game too easy by doing so then try Ultra-Violence.
