I don't got a problem emulating them, I was just wondering. I've only ever seen the NES versions of DK, Punch Out, and Mario Bros for sale.

Uh huh. Nintendo licensed out the manufacture of the machines to some other company (.Ikegami Tsushinki). But they didn't read the contract close enough, so said company now owns the source code.

No idea how Rare got it for DK64.

Huh, interesting but also kind of sad. You'd think with all the money Nintendo makes nowadays, they'd try and renegotiate to get the source code back. But then again I don't know the specifics of the contract or whether or not Ikegami is a bigger company (though manufacturers are usually pretty big)

They probably figure the NES version is good enough. They even modified it to have all four levels for some anniversary release that was a limited time promotion. Which was a real kick in the balls.
