The show has retroactively ruined the books by basically spoiling years of fan speculation by presenting it all in black and white. I think this is why GRRM has given up. He knows the books are now secondary to the show. He's spending his life writing a story that is supposed to be unpredictable but has already been made clear for all to see. He's never going to finish the books. You don't write a book in seven years without experiencing some extreme writer's block on the way and possible a couple of existential crisis'.
