The most disappointing game this year for me.

Combat is meh with almost zero difficulty, enemies are varied, but lackluster enemies, bosses are a joke. The story is meh, characters are meh, world is meh. First two playthroughs are a slog, third one is somewhat better, but it's too late, too little. Final battle is alright, I guess.

All artsy-fartsy and philosophy stuff is bad and unimpressive.

At least, even with all forced drama original Nier had characters.

As a game it was alright, but I enjoyed some of the more unique elements and the creative use of gameplay to lead the story, like some of the hacking twists and the tower sequence. As a game it's alright, but it's a fun experience. I definitely wouldn't recommend it to everyone though, only a few of my friends that I know can put up with some of the general Taro bullshit.

The open world is drab and boring and ever since The Last of Us, "humanity is almost extinct" isn't an excuse for drab and boring anymore, the story is dreary, the )S playthrough was insulting, and the actual story missions are the only highlight. They feel like they were designed by a guy with severe attention deficit syndrome, but that makes them about twelve times as engaging as walking around the open world listening for the pinging sounds of your Scanner. The philosophy theme is barely noteworthy, especially because it makes zero sense. Kierkegaard would spin in his grave if he saw the character named after him, for example.

Why does a 10/10 game need to be revolutionary? There have been excellent, 10/10 games that accomplished that by just executing on their formula very well. This game has frankly turned me off of video games. And definitely not in the "It's so good nothing else can compete" sense but in the "Can't bring myself to turn the PS4 on because just taking the Nier disc out is too much effort to put into that game" sense.

The graphics are boring as fuck.
The story is only seen as deep by someone who only knows about philosophy from Wikipedia.
The gameplay is decent, but kind of bland. Not easy enough to be a Kingdom Hearts tier button masher but not hard enough to be Bloodborne's insanity.
The bosses were kind of inspired.
The fanservice can't sustain the game on its own.
The final boss battles of both A/B and C/D were fantastic, I'll grant.
The characters weren't fleshed out enough to be interesting. A2 in particular is flat as fuck.
The Tweeests were okay.
The soundtrack was alright, with a couple great songs and a whole lot of forgettable background noise.
The sidequests are inane busywork at its finest.
But the worst of all is the "irony". You know, where the game admits that something is stupid but still keeps it in. For an example, take the map. The game admits to you that the map is shit, but instead of the devs, I dunno, fixing the map, the game just smugly agrees with you that the map is shit and then leaves you to it.

I had every reason to like this game, what with it being a platinum game with a story more elaborate than "brain harvesting lol", it triggering my blindfold fetish gloriously and the gameplay being decent, but the game just squandered my goodwill to no end. I enjoyed Trails of Cold Steel II, Persona 5 and Horizon Zero Dawn infinitely more than this snorefest.

You would understand if you played action games. Platinum are basically the only studio in the world right now doing anything relevant in the genre, for them to spend years developing a game that looks like an action game and then turns out to not be one basically means they baited the entire action game fanbase, and then said "we did this, and now there won't be any more action games for 4 years".

There's only so much that any studio can work on at a time. When one of only a few studios left in the world that develops good gameplay wastes their time and resources on a game that doesn't have it, it's bad for the medium as a whole. When that game is a breakout financial success (like Automata was), it's even worse.

Videogames, as a format, can't afford for Platinum to buy into the Cinematic Experience meme right now, and that's probably what's going to happen. Automata may have killed the last good action game developer left. And /v/, one of the last places left that hates the "cinematic experience" and constantly cries louder for actual games, has done nothing but sing its praises and help skyrocket it to meme game status because of Robotbutt and Moon Man.

Platinum is dead and /v/ killed it by loving this mediocre game.

If you can relate, imagine how all of Valve's fanbase felt when they announced that their next project was a fucking Hearthstone clone. Not just because it doesn't look fun, but because it mentally confirms the realization that the company has given up on actual game development because market-feeder bullshit is more profitable.

Even if the game is pretty good for what it is, the people who made it are capable of better. When they shit this out and it's their biggest cash influx in their company's history, that changes how they work. I don't want Platinum games making mash-friendly 2deep4u ARPGs with buttprotagonists for the next decade, but that's probably exactly what they're going to do. That sucks.

And in 2021, /v/ will again lament the death of vidya, like always, and wonder why all of the good game developers only make casual-friendly 'muh storytelling' games, and Automata will be part of the answer.
