It gets shit on for its soundtrack (which I actually like) and its eye-searing color palette (which was a reaction to CotM's muted colors that couldn't be seen on an original GBA). It's actually one of my favorite games in the series.

It tried way too hard to be SoTN without actually succeeding and it was just kinda ugly looking once backlit GBA became a thing and its bright graphics became unnecessary.
It also had that stupid furniture sidequest but the magic sub weapon combinations were cool.

Castlevania 64 is mechanically worse than any other 3D games that came after it.

Well, I don't really like Rastan but loved Volgarr, the enemy placement and level design feels a lot like classic Castlevania though there's a lot of Ghosts and Goblins in there as well.

I want to get into Metroidvanias and so thought start out with SotN.

Should I go with PS1 or PSP version? Or just another game altogether?

SotN is a great starting point. Go with the PSP version, but at least look up on youtube the original cutscenes on PS1 so you can have a taste of the legendarily bad translation.

It strikes a balance that makes for something different. I wouldn't say it's an improvement over either.

I also think Odallus was a better attempt at hitting that target than OoE.

As a kid that got introduced to Castlevania on the metroidvania days, I used to think those were far superior to the classic titles, but now that I finally got the chance to play through Rondo of Blood to completion for the first time, I don't know anymore... I never felt this rush of blood after finishing a segment in the metroidvanias, but I feel like a boss when I clear a level in the classic ones.
