Could use some advice /v/.
Recently beat SMTIV, my first SMT game. I had a good time with it and am interested in playing more of them. The one that has really caught my attention though was strange journey. I adore sci fi and this game seems up my ally in that regard. However I have also heard this is one of themost brutal games in the series. SMTIV was overall fine for me, struggled here and there but got through with some trial and error. Would you guys still recomnend it even to a releativelt new fan? Also I do know about strange journey redux but that isn't comimg for awhile and I don't want to wait that long.
Shin Megami Tensei thread.

There was nothing brutal about it
No game in the series is brutal in any way unless you count superbosses that are optional
>>387102559
Strange Journey mostly can wall you with some later bosses depending on the ending you go for. It's also unlike IV in that the Press Turn system is replaced with Demon Co-op, so you can't get extra actions for hitting weaknesses or getting crits. There's also no overworld, if you've played something like Etrian Odyssey it's similar, the whole game is just a series of dungeons and you explore them in first person. It can be a little difficult to jump into, but you should be okay.
>>387102559
It was the second game I played in the series, the first being Persona 3.
You should be fine OP. You'll probably struggle, but it's nothing insurmountable.
>>387102559
The only brutal part is that the final boss is less like a difficulty spike and more like a steep cliff. You can always use demon passwords to get broken doppelgangers at that point though.
>>387102981
Man I cant get into EO no matter how hard I try and I love MT
All u gotta do is fuse shit, every noob doesn't fuse shit often enough, so fuse shit and the game is easy
>>387102559
>this is one of themost brutal games in the series
dungeon navigation is tedious as fuck due to trial and error teleportation puzzles, you need really specific team builds for certain bosses, and the final boss is a massive difficulty spike. that's pretty much all the difficulty stuff, if you liked IV go for it.
>>387103195
I never had a problem with the teleports and beat the game with no guides
You fags are such casuals
how do I defeat Asura? his asura roga always fucks me over
I love those fucking SJ helmets.
>>387103287
Try going in solo. If your gear is any good, then you might be able to fuck him up on your own.
>>387103287
defend first turn
Thanks guys for the answer, I guess I'll start it up soon. Sorry but I had heard from many the game can be quite difficult and didn't know what to expect. As I said IV gave me a bit of trouble with some bosses, Lilith and King Kenji fucked me pretty good at first, but nothing some trial and error didn't solve.
Thanks guys.
>>387103582
SMTIV should be piss-easy after Medusa.
>>387103572
I did that and it didnt work
>>387103408
alright I'll try that, should I bring a healer demon just in case though? I am new to SMT and I've savescumming
>>387103582
You should play 4 apocalypse since its a direct sequel
SJ is unironically one of the easiest games in the series, Persona 3: FES is arguably more difficult
>>387102559
Why not play SMTIVA before SJ? It's not too expensive now, it's a direct sequel to IV, and it can kill time before redux
>>387103837
(You)
>>387103789
If you're cheating then you're just going to fall further and further behind
post more vending machines
>>387102559
>Also I do know about strange journey redux but that isn't comimg for awhile and I don't want to wait that long.
Yeah about that...
>>387103789
No, just heal when you're no longer enraged. If your gear isn't up for the task, then I'd recommend fusing Black Frost since he should be fusable by the Asura fight.
>savescumming
I hope you don't mean you're using savestates, because that would be mad gay.
>>387103835
>>387103852
While I'm aware of IV:A it's for two reasons. First, as I said in the OP, SJ has interested me the most of the games in the series. Also while I enjoyed IV I would rather play it later then with IV fresh in my mind. I enjoyed it but I'm not dying for more of IV, just more SMT.
>>387103286
>I never had a problem with the teleports
It's just time-consuming.
>whoops i took the wrong teleport/escalator/hole/one-way door and got stuck back at the start of the area better walk all the way back and try the one that was right next to it
>>387104196
Please fuck off you assholes ruined all SJ discussion on this board
Im extremely excited for deep SJ but fuck if Im discussing it here
>>387104196
Damn, why did they make the protag so much younger looking? I loved imaging him as a middle aged guy who isn't having any if this bullshit and just wants to wants to home.
>>387102559
Strange Journey is quite a bit different than IV
>different weakness exploitation system (objectively worse in my opinion)
>first person dungeon crawling on grid map
>enemies don't have models on the map that you can avoid, encounters are automatic/unavoidable after a certain number of steps
>can't save anywhere like in IV, so one wrong move can make you lose a ton of progress, unlike in IV where you can just save after every fight
>mido app in IV was fucking awesome and it sucks not having all of its funcitonality in sj
all of these things are necessarily negatives, but they definitely take some getting used to. if you want something that is more similar to IV, I'd recommend IV: Apocalypse. it's a direct sequel to IV and have the same mechanics (some of the story shit is annoying early on, but gets more tolerable as it progresses)
>>387104716
>objectively worse
>in my opinion
So, how bad is the "vending marine" meme? Is the hero really that useless other then to randomly use items in battle?
>>387104971
No. You can still hit enemy weaknesses to trigger co-op attacks along with it often doing decent damage for most of the game.
>>387102559
>but that isn't comimg for awhile and I don't want to wait that long
DSJ releases in just 2 fucking months you goddamned EOP.
I notice a lack of the most handsome, cool, and powerful demon in this thread.
>>387104971
After a certain point his damage just can't compare to his demons' outside of triggering co-op attacks. Plus items having absolute priority is pretty nice.
>>387105135
>learning a language just to play shitty anime games.
Ayy, enjoy your VNs you retard. That's the closest you'll get to social interaction with other humans.
>>387105168
Nothing is cool about having a paper mache face.
>>387104971
>randomly use items
You will be strategically using items in battle. That's pretty useful. But for real, space marine will never be your main source of damage unless you get some pretty kick-ass end game gear.
>>387105281
Kill yourself, son of man.
>>387105168
Fuck off.
should I delete some old demons and get new ones? I have an Oni and a Jack Frost that I dont use them, and when I try to use them for fusion, they create shitty demons, I am at sector D
>>387105438
Yeah, why not.
Has Atlus ever said why SJ isn't considered a mainline game? The demonica has pretty prolific cameos and mentions in IV and IV:A.
Say something nice to nu-Zelenin.
What's a good order to play these in? Only played Persona and would like to try DDS and all other SMT games
>>387105748
Just play whatever looks interesting to you.

SJ's not numbered because it doesn't take place in Tokyo, but still considered a mainline

>>387102559
Just fucking get on playing it. Just think about it, if some fans prefer it over IV or Persona games it must be good.
Less hesitation, more playing. If a game is hard you just keep whacking at it until you beat it. Just imagine, YouTube let's players with IQ in the double digits could be it, you certainly can.
>>387104971
If you know your shit you main character can do tons of work. This plays on the EO engine, so status effects have very high hit rate and it scales with Luck. Meaning if your main character has high Luck (protip: he will) status effect gun skills always hit. There is a gun with a stone effect, Rock Bullet, it can end battles super quick specially Search Demons whose forma you can sell for a fuckton of cash.
Also, don't shit on items. That shit is legit.
>>387104971
You can do okay damage with guns and you get some good ones near the end of the game but most of your damage comes from demons who you need to keep pumping full of sp.
>>387104971
Depends on RNG. You can always be a vending bot thanks to good item selection and turn priority when using items.
