the hd collection is fucked up because it's based on an earlier version of the game than what was originally shipped. they also redid a lot of the audio.
just play the pc versions there's some guy who posts links to them in every silent hill thread.

Just emulate the console versions of 1-3 and call it a day, don't touch anything else. The PC versions are a pain to get working and at best they look about the same, except PC version has worse fog and razor-sharp shadows which I don't know if it's supposed to be a plus or a minus.
