Why can't the japanese do weird, unique settings? I mean

Why can't the japanese do weird, unique settings? I mean it would seem that they would have everything involving the word "weird" covered on every front. But when I think of those kinds of setting to my mind come games like Morrowind, Zeno Clash, Oddworld or Planescape: Torment. Why is japanese fantasy alwas so much more "standard" or if anything with a few odd spins to it.

I don't think those are that weird though. I mean just look at something like Oddworld, there arent' even humans in that game. Planescape is a place were all types of reality meet together and Morrowind has sci-fi dwarves, lizardmen, crab-people, gods who can edit the game and cyborgs from the future fighting medieval-tech elves.

I get what you're saying, but you're putting it the wrong way.
It's not like the japanese can't do weird and unique settings, they obviously can. Shit, Japan is known for weirdness.

What you're actually trying to say is that the japanese don't tend to make settings that are very dark and grotesque, and they especially don't pursue those things with some level of realistic visuals.

For example, Dark Souls is a dark game full of grotesque things, but the setting itself isn't so much like that, with some exceptions it's basically just medieval fantasy.

Even the really weird developers like Suda51 make bizarre characters and bizarre circumstances but visually never go near the dark and grotesque.

I feel like it's a cultural thing, perhaps having a lot to do with modern art. The Japanese modern art pieces that get really famous tend to me these really orderly, perfectly aligned, sometimes outright geometrical things.
It's to be expected from a society full of taboos and ridiculous social pressure.

Then again, what they lack in dark and grotesque in vidya, they make up in manga.

Morrowind is the exception, not the rule. The vast majority of western RPGs are either straight-up Tolkien clones or set in an equally generic fantasy or sci-fi setting. Just look at all the recent major releases like Witcher 3, Mass Effect Andromeda, and Pillars of Eternity. All of them have generic as fuck settings

Except the exact opposite is true, Japan does way more unique settings and the west is generally a lot more generic. You posted the handful of exceptions. Hell your point falls apart immediately if you look at Morrowind's sequels.

I do love Nausicaa. I always thought it might have been the inspiration for Nausicaa, but I wouldn't say it's really the same weirdness level as Moebius or defenitely as Morrowind.

That is a bit of what I mean. But I'd go a bit further. You're right, a jrpg even if has some weird gimmick aesthetically will still most of the time look like something ranging between a battle shounen, realism or a cartoon. On the other hand games like Morrowind, Planescape or Zeno Clash just have their own odd style that doesn't fit into anything. You walk around Morrowind and these mesopotamian style buildings, with mushrooms instead of trees everywhere, flying jellyfish, people riding on bugs while the races besides humans are lizardmen, catpeople and elves which look more like aliens than pretty humans with pretty ears.
