HW1: It was an RTS literally for kids. not like CoD kids, but like legit primary school kids. there was literally no strategy, no flanking bonuses, and you just had to spam units down a linear path waiting for your ult that your character gives for another big push

RTS with FPS command of units.

Many have attempted it, but they always fuck it up somehow.

Battlezone, Maelstrom, and C&C Renegade are games which have come close.

There's just something especially gritty about zooming down to the battlefield where rounds are flying everywhere, airplanes screaming around overhead in another layer of firefights, you advance upon the enemy in your armored vehicle.

Then BAM, you're hit by some large shell or munition, and have to start returning fire through the smoke and flame and blood. BOOM! Your view slightly zooms out as you watch yourself explode into bits of debris.

Then you zoom out the rest of the way, return to RTS mode. Build another front, and lead the charge, die again! There's something cathartic about being the expended lives that you are throwing into battle.

Even moreso, if you're leading the charge of your own forces.

Mount & Blade does this fairly well too, when you lead an infantry or cavalry attack front-to-front.

Much as I miss it, there really wasn't anything left for it after 3. 1 laid out the concept, 2 polished it while adding some QoL mechanics, 3 literally jumped the shark and tried to jew the fanbase in the process.
