Yaoi/yuri in japanese games are fanservice - idealised (even in drama or something not of clear fanservice sungenres) picture. And in most cases there are clearly male and female roles, just being filled with both males of females. Other cases are usually completely fanservice, so people are okay with what they don't usually see in their everyday life.
In west lgbt and other sjw guys had become not just minorities, who want their rights, but actual problem, because they actually want to swap roles with what they call "privileged" people. And most of lgbt characters are usually created by sjws, not by people, who intentionally sexualise it in pure visual or "feelings" fanservice.

A lot of western games will put LGBT characters in games for the sake of putting them in, and try to draw attention to say "Hey, look! Our game is hip and modern! We have a lesbian chick!"
Whereas often with Japanese games, LGBT is just a trait of the character and the development of that person doesn't revolve around it.

These characters aren't treated as normal in Japanese fiction. They're not usually hated or portrayed negatively, but it's still clear that this isn't normal behavior and everyone in the story knows it. In the west it is being used as propaganda so it's treated as if homosexuality or gender dysphoria are normal and that if you don't accept that you're evil.

Undertale was fine though, I didn't have a problem with it.

Because, generally speaking, there's no "agenda" and Japanese developers don't have a chip on their shoulder when trying to do it. They're not worried about representation or positive portrayals, just interesting ideas (for the most part). Its similar to why female characters in japanese games aren't much of a problem.

Simple: Japan doesn't half ass it. They either go all the way with making the character gay as fuck, or they make them completely normal with the side note of being gay. They don't try this mixed bag special snowflake bullshit that western games always put in that ends up making the characters annoying and frustrating to sit through.

People give Japan shit for sexualizing stuff, but in reality they're just the most open about it, and they honestly subscribe to "if you don't like the characterization, then you're not our target audience". They aren't begging for acceptance and they certainly aren't begging for a "mainstream audience".

Characters CAN be written around their sexuality and be good at the same time. It's the strength of the writing that will determine if the character is good or not. Only videogames have this problem because the vidya industry is stuffed with shit writers and directors who can't into execution.
