There was a sense of grand and immersive adventure to it back when Dragon Quest came out. Later the gnere started to die, because even action/adventure games were able to have equally large worlds, but then the genre revived in a sense with Squaresoft's Final Fatnasy VII. For a while it became an interative cinematic experience. These days the JRPG has practically turned into an action/adventure genre. Even Final Fantasy XIII-3 and Final Fantasy XV are action games.

I like almost all of them to some extent have played all the mainline nonmmo titles multiple times bar 13 and about 2/3rds of the spin offs
There is no lockpicking so I have no idea what you are ranting about there except for 1 optional part in ff6 where youre TREASURE HUNTER opens a locked door

I could never get into turn-based JRPGs (aside from P3 but /v/ spoiled so i dropped it), and with all my effort i finished my first one, FF4, last month, it might have a ton of flaws but the story is amazing

I'd definitely believe you, i grew up with PC/PS2 so mostly played FPS, this game was able despite it's limitations to nail story, atmosphere and characters in an amazing way, music was great too, but random encounters and turn-based combat are subjectively awful, such a shame because P3 was incredible aside from grind and the former problems i mentioned

If you like story then FF6 would be more your thing. Especially if you didn't mind 4 being very linear.
Give FF5 a try though. It's not too light on story and it does have some feels, but it's got some of the best gameplay in the series. It relies on some prior knowledge of final fantasy to not make dumb decisions, but if you've beaten a couple then you should be fine
