Play 4, 5, then Zero. Best games in the series.

Then Jap version of 3 with fan translation.

The PSP games are 7/10, 2 has a remake on the NDS, and there's also Assault Horizon, which everybody hates, but it's actually not entirely bad. 6 is Xbox 360 only, but I hear it's good.

4, 5 and Zero are must play.
6 is the only good one in HD. Avoid AH.
X is pretty good, X2 is so-so and it's also set in real world.
2 has a remake on 3DS that's called Assault Horizon Legacy although it has nothing to do with AH. It's somewhat good.
The western version of 3 is heavily butchered - less missions, no branching, no cutscenes. If you wanna play it, use the fan translation of the JP version.

It is. It's not talked about as much probably because it was 360 exclusive, one of those early Japanese ones from when Microsoft was throwing allot of funding at Japanese devs to get Japanese games in hopes to get Jap support on the thing, but it didn't really work and it sold like shit over there and most people who were more invested in Japanese games west went playstation as well. Least that's what it feels like to me.

But yeah it's good. Gave us pic related as well which is a plus.

Don't forget that it gets a lot of hate for the story/voice acting.
To be fair the only things that are really bad are the woman's voice and the constant awkward use of 'go dance with the angels'.
