ITT: Buzzwords or terms for video games that you hate. Both positive and negative.
>comfy
>>387049254
Kino
soulless
>>387049254
>gunplay
>>387049254
Linear to denote that its a bad story.
Progressive
>>387049456
literally never happened
cinematic.
>emergent gameplay
This is never the case unless it's some autism simulator like Dwarf Fortress or SS13
Cinematic.
Everything ITT so far is fine.
>>387049254
"immersion" is the worst.
>>387049616
>cinematic is bad but kino is fine
You're an odd one.
>>387049596
untrue
>>387049254
>it's a TRIPLE A/AA/INDIE game
>>387049616
Its ridiculous to complain about "cinematic", as if you want static textblocks on a static screen to convey dialogue instead of something the witcher 3 has with expressive character animations and camera angles.
>>387049254
>fun
>>387049689
Name an example that isn't an autism simulator.
>>387049336
Came here to say this
>objectively [value judgment]
Gamers have an inability to express themselves outside of buzzwords.
Seriously, ask them to explain what they mean by "mechanics", "bad writing", "story", and "gameplay". You won't get a good fucking answer because gamers are mentally 12.
>>387049963
That's called poor critical thinking.
Diverse
wider audience
What does "comfy" even mean? Immersive?
>>387049761
all game are cinematic now, but
when a promoter of reviewer has nothing much to say about the game beyond cinematic as point of note and presentation tied to it, I will likely not care about the game.
>>387049254
Overrated.
>>387049963
Chances are you've never bothered to ask anyone to explain what they mean by those terms.
>>387049254
artificial difficulty
>>387050078
I dont want my games to be the opposite of diverse, yet I dont want to hear "diverse" in the marketing effort because it indicates the desire to push their values onto everyone playing the game.
>>387050124
Chill environments with heavy, yet welcoming atmosphere.
>>387050246
So immersive?
gamefeel
>>387049510
Dark souls
""""""FUN""""""
>>387050293
A game can be immersive without feeling welcoming
"back to its roots"
>doesn't actually go back to roots
>>387050293
No, an unwelcoming or unnerving/disgusting environment can be immersive as well.
>>387049681
Kino is used in jest. People who use "cinematic" to describe games usually actually mean it, which I find ridiculous.
>>387050293
But you can be immersed in a cold, scary atmosphere.
>>387050293
you can be immersed in foreboding environments, but you can't be comfortable
Portal has immersive environments and atmosphere. but the sterile, stark and claustrophobic nature of the maps distinctly makes them not "comfy"
>>387049254
What the fuck is wrong with this guy?
>>387049254
Holy fuck, Sess, what did they do to you?
>>387049254
>artificial [insert word here]
>>387050190
I have numerous times on this mediocre malaysian dick measuring contest platform.
>>387050394
>we want to appeal to old gamers and new gamers alike
>>387049254
>accessibility
>>387050570
Intelligence?
>>387050293
Nah, both Metro games, Stalker and Morrowind are all immersive, stuff like Arcanum, Arx Fatalis and Gothic are "comfy".
>>387050576
And people honestly couldn't explain "gameplay" or "story" to you? That's bizarre, if true, because even the 12-year-old you described would be able to do that.
>>387050124
When a game is comfy, it makes me feel warm and comfortable irl. I can identify the feeling every single time, which is why I use the word unironically.
It's a mental equivalent of a liquid slowly adjusting its shape to the container.
>>387049254
Gimmick
meme
>>387050618
Touche.
>>387050229
Of course I mean the code speak version of "diversity".
>people only list negative terms
kek
Exclusive
Half the time it's one four different fucking consoles as well
>>387050462
>Kino is used in jest.
Your naivete would be cute if it wasn't so sadly mistaken.
>>387049254
>it's fun
Literally has no meaning.
>>387050124
Pleasant to play, do stuff in, makes you feel comfortable and positive, enjoyable
>>387050863
Bullshit.
>>387050124
Try watching Lost in Translation on a lazy overcast or rainy afternoon/evening.
That's comfy.
>>387049596
You can't have emergent gameplay without autistic mechanics and complexity
>>387050907
You need to take things that people say on the internet less seriously. Especially here.
>>387049254
I hate it when people think "comfy" and "fun" aren't real arguments to make when defending a videogame.
Feels like those people haven't experienced games that are comfy or fun and that's sad
>>387051124
"Fun" is worthless as an argument, because if someone's claiming a game to be shit, then they obviously don't think it's fun. It's not that you're presenting them with new information or any kind of rebuttal.
>dynamic
>>387051124
Its meaningless, has zero information content.
>my endorphin levels were slightly elevated while I played the game
yeah thanks, but what can you tell me about the game itself?
>>387049254
not a buzzword
>>387049412
not a buzzword
>>387049426
not a buzzword
>>387049654
not a buzzword
>>387050215
not a buzzword
>>387050394
not a buzzword
>>387050590
not a buzzword
>>387050868
not a buzzword
>>387049761
>>387050165
The problem with "cinematic" is that it puts the perspective of the developer front and center. They stopped looking at the product as game and started looking at it as a movie. This is particularly bad because of how limiting movies can be compared to games. It's also an excuse for shitty optimization and frame rates.
>>387051542
>buzzwords OR TERMS
you fucking mongoloid
>it's the Dark Souls of [x]!
>>387049336
>Kino
prettycomfybuzzword, only because it generates lots of rage and butthurt for no apparent reason.
>procedurally/randomly generated
>>387050462
>>387050907
>>387051116
It's more on so Poe's Law imo, when people use the term.
>>387051906
Because /v/edditors don't actually understand the proper use of a term stolen from a far more intellectual board
>>387051957
Untill a large AAA studio does randomly generated well it'll imply the game is made by a small indie team which doesnt have the resources to handcraft a world.
>cinematic
>living world
>immersive
>>387052072
I understand and appreciate the effort of defining film archetypes but the way this goes about it and the terms it uses are so stupid and only serve to confuse anyone who doesn't follow this specific method.
>>387052227
whatever
>>387052248
>cinematic
24 FPS, dumb camera effects
