Think about the best games on each of those platforms. What's the attach rate to them? Maybe with the exception of GBC and DS with Pokemon, I'll bet you the attach rate of Super Mario Galaxy and whatever's seen as good on playstation systems, the attach rate is low.

Pokemon is a different beast altogether and if Nintendo plays it's cards right with the Switch and Pokemon, it'll sell 100mil units as well

The Ps2 was a dvd player for most people when dvds became a thing and also a console for the kids so it was win-win for families to get one. The Wii was a console mostly for normies who wanted to play party games (which is pretty obvious when you look at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_Wii_video_games) after Eyetoy and Singstar started that horrible trend (and Nintendo perfected it).
The original gameboy mostly sold through Pokemon (3 of the 5 best selling games on Gameboy are Pokemon titles, the others are Tetris (number one) and Super Mario Land (4) number), the first generation sold nearly 60 million games, the current only sold 15 million and the one before 16 million.

In most cases it's social trends except for Playstation 1. Dunno why that was successful.

I'm not sure about 100m, but you're right, Pokemon is a fucking powerhouse, whether the game is good or not.
