Replayed Transistor yesterday and I think Pyre is more enjoyable to play, despite Transistor's great variety in abilities. Also story and characters are definitely much better in Pyre.

Hedwyn, although I didn't get to see much of him since I set him free first chance I got.

Doing a second playthrough now with difficulty turned up to the max, I want to know is it possible for the Tempers to get a second shot at a liberation rite or not?
>>

I don't think so. Poor Ignarius, he did nothing wrong

Same way with Jodariel here.
I wish she would snap me like a twig
>>
>>387036260
I don't think any team can get a second shot, because that would raise the possibility of them winning twice, and more often than not freeing a random mook that has no established character. Would be kinda shitty from a story perspective
>>
Reminder that if you didn't free Hedwyn, Rukey and Jodariel first then you're doing it wrong.

Why is this bitch so awful at her job? Almost every other team that is in a liberation rite disrespect her and all she does is keep saying she'll kick them out but never does. Then almost every enemy team straight-up cheats.

I freed him third, actually.
My point is that nobody but the starting 3 actually desire their freedom particularly, except maybe pamitha and Gilman once his arc is complete.

I think all of Supergiant's games have been great for different reasons, but it's hard for me to pick a favorite.

Pyre's the most invested I've been in their characters, but I'm torn on whether or not I would have enjoyed it more if it was more standard action like Bastion, but with your whole party of characters involved.

Did end up enjoying the sports section far more than I expected to though. Being able to canonically lose the liberation rite was the first time in a long while that a game made my heart race.

Also Sandra's great.
>>
>>387035007
I like it way way more than Bastion/Transistor

Bastion was kinda nice, but outside of aesthetics it was somewhat dull and repetitive, the narrative was superbly well performed but poorly written, like no dialogue was good, just random garbage pullet out of some hipster's ass. But I understand someone younger could see it as a very memorable game and treasure it dearly, and hate me for saying negative things about it, I'm probably just rotten and can't enjoy things in life anymore.

Transistor had so much wasted potential, setting was good, combat was good, but exploiting the system was waaaaay too easy, no bosses was challenging if you did that fast cheap combo like 3-5 times and then hide for a second, repeat something like that. It could be easily fixed if they had added some challenge mode restricting your skills or something.

Pyre is a fantastic improvement not only to supergiant games, but to all games altogether. The fact you can progress even when you fail is marvelous. I don't know if this had been done in other games before but and they just stole the idea, but even if they did I applaud their implementation. The setting is SSS in my book, the art is not as good but is pretty somewhat unique. The actual basketball matches are cool but start getting repetitive near the end, probably because the AI starts getting too cheesy and you have to spam whatever op combo you learned by then. The talent tree is soooo good, you don't need 30+ skills to have a good talent tree, this talents are so simplified and yet offer enough variety to make you think what to chose.

Sadly what ruined Pyre for me was the lame mini adventure, I don't give a rat's ass about some revolution, and all the choices besides who to send during ascencion feel so inconsequential, you want to grab herbs, or want to go to the poison lake? ok here's +1 stat next round for your team.... I would like more mini games, but I can only remember 2.
>>
>>387039753
I have to agree with you on the revolution part. I just wasn't invested in Sandalwood's plan at all. I realise that they needed some overarching conflict to give the story a sense of direction, but they could've done something that the majority of people would actually care about.

Like, you barely know anything about the commonwealth and then start being told that it's shit. Would've been better to actually see it for ourselves somehow, in my opinion.

I was invested enough that I hoped that it would turn out well for the characters' sakes, but I kind of wish that we had gotten a chance to see what the Commonwealth was like firsthand, or had a an epilogue section where we got to see and/or play as everyone we freed during the actual revolution.
>>
>>387035007
To me Pyre ils the worst Supergiant game, although it's still good. Gameplay is too repetitive, AI is too predictable, music isn't as great as Bastion's or Transistor's, visuals aren't as pretty, story and world aren't as engaging. Still, kudos for trying something different.

My favorite team is Hedwyn, Xae and Ruskey.

I freed Hedwyn first.

I left Xae, Ti'zo and myself behind. Xae and Ti'zo seem to have bonded well, Xae doesn't have anything to go back to but she can stay with that guy whose father is a cur and I can just live the rest of my life with my life with my lovely Sandra.

Jodariel, bitch has been down there the longest and my playstyle couldn't really exploit her.

Ti'zo: cause he/she/it is a fucking bird.
Volfred: cause he had already given up, was Ti'zo's BFF and was the idealistic kind of treeman who would be better remembered if he didn't do anything after the revolution.
Myself: fuck civilized living I want to keep playing magical basketball.

Did nobody else leave Bertrude in Downside? I thought it was a pretty easy choice, considering she's there by choice, and already has a livelihood set up as a talisman/potion seller in the swamp.

Especially if you also leave Volfred, as most seem to, cause they're old pals.
>>
>>387047505
I don't think she's really there by choice, from what I understood she just followed Volfred because she loved him.
I sent her back but that's because I also sent Volfred. Separating them didn't make sense to me.

The art is really the only thing keeping me going right now. The gameplay is fine, but it really isn't what I want from a single player game. I don't like how I am supposed to be this character "The Reader".

It was fun playing against my bro in the local versus mode, and it is a shame there isn't online play.

Also it would be cool if you could coop with your bros, though I guess having only one person move at a time kinda goes against that.

Actually the combat is fine. It just gets very repetitive after the first 12 fights.
>>
>>387049867
It is more like reverse ultimate frisbee. Instead of having to stop when you have the frisbee while everyone else can move, you can only move when you have the frisbee and everyone else has to stop.

Plus it is all zone defense which is illegal in basketball.

>>387049867
I just got excited to see it was a new Supergiant game and then triggered on multiple levels afterwards. Tried to watch trailers and they did fucking NOTHING to explain the combat or gameplay flow, read reviews and found out it's supernatural hoopz.

No thanks. Fuck. I wish Supergiant wasn't Nintendo tier with their need to change things up significantly with each release.

>How did it compare to Bastion/Transistor

I actually did not like Bastion at all. Thought it was overrated. Transistor I have not played because of my opinion on Bastion. When this game came out, I had a feeling it'd be good, and it was. Now I want to give Transistor a shot. Still think Bastion is overrated.

I thought the same thing until I actually played the game. I always hated sports game and thought it would be painful to play but it's not. Try it for an hour and refund it if you really hate it.

As for Supergiant changing things with each release, I'd rather see them do that than rehash the same formula every three years.
>>
>>387049594
space jam has a lot of depth to it though

there's no single strat to win, races are reasonably balanced, and talismans/masteries add new strategies (explode a guy to create a portal on the other side of the map then roll in with a big dude that stuns the enemy team on jump)

I haven't played Bastion in years, but I'd say it's probably on par. Haven't played Transistor.

>Best Character
Sandra best waifu, but I generally liked everyone.

>Best Team
Pamitha/Bertrude/Fae or Ti'zo are the best player team. Fate is the best opposing team. Legit wanted to let them win a liberation but I never got the chance.

>Who did you free first
Hedwyn. He made the most sense as he felt like the best choice to kick things off aside from Volfred (who didn't want to go anyway), and he's the only one who's crime I knew.

>Who did you leave behind?
Not entirely intentional, but Volfred, Bertrude and Pamitha. Volfred and Bertrude didn't care about leaving, and Bertrude just wants to be where Volfred was.

Pamitha I kept around partially because she was my MVP for the game, and because I let Oralech go. But she also got to sort of reconcile with Tamitha even though she's a bitch and hang out with Bertrude.

Overall I was pretty satisfied with the ending. Commonwealth went down peaceful, all of the Nightwings got some kind of good resolution and someone to hang out with, and I got to wander the world with Sandra. Did feel bad for the Fate and Ignarius though, so I may try to let them go in another playthrough.

I still find the narration (come on, he's voicing the whole story) and music itself, style and aesthetic present in every song, much better - sure it doesn't change and has a lot less variety but Build That Wall, Mother I'm Here and Setting Sail, Coming Home are all probably above most of the Pyre songs. The ending song of Pyre was actually meh, the weakest of all, probably because they had to make it so variable.

Ruck's narration in Bastion regularly inhibits your ability to go fast because he'll go on for a paragraph at a time and the lines will queue up.It was cool at the time but feels heavy handed and laid on too thick now that I've played their later stuff. Rucks gets credit for being the first time anyone had done that but they did a pretty weak job of making you feel like the narrator was a part of the plot. They did an amazing job of learning from their first game for Transistor but kept the voice too similar and made him a budget Rucks in that game basically, but The Voice is the culmination of all the experience they've had in the past two games with a completely fresh character for Logan and it blows anything else they've done away.
Bastion has a unified aesthetic but it falls into the trap of making the songs sound too similar, there's a few slower tracks I can't tell apart.
And as for combat: Every Supergiant has some mechanic that you can potentially cheese or abuse that you need to ignore. In transistor it was a program or maybe combination of a program and certain modifiers I forget the name of, in Pyre it's abusing the AI with saps. Both of those are pretty easily avoidable.

But in Bastion? It's literally the block and dodge. It's inescapable and an integral part of the core gameplay.
>Dodge is hugely generous with I-Framtes
>Block can be imprecisely held down to block pretty much fucking anything
>On top of this you can reflect attacks back with the fucking shield
Most action games would be on a lot of peoples shitlist for having an over forgiving dodge or block mechanic, Bastion has both

Also there's the fact that the hitbox for falling off the world is consistently terrible throughout the game.

I loved the art and music of Bastion and Transistor but found them boring as all shit.

Not sure I care about Pyre. I hear it's way too easy to exploit the AI's stupidity.
>>
>>387035007
>How did you like it compared to Bastion/Transistor
I'd honestly rate it higher than both. Bastion was a surprise and still rates high, but I think it's a bit overvalued. It had great music and atmosphere, but the gameplay was really generic. Pyre's atmosphere is less good, but the story, characters, music and most importantly the gameplay are all a step up.

>Best Character
Sandra for NPCs. Sir Gilman for player characters. Barker for enemies.

>Best Team
Volfred/Bertrude/Pamitha

>Who did you free first
Rukey Greentail. I didn't care much for his character, I rarely used him in battle and the only reason he was even eligible for release is because I was artificially boosting the Enlightenment level of my "useless" team members by spamming personal training at every opportunity.

>Who did you leave behind?
Myself, Ti'zo and Bertrude. Ti'zo literally belonged in Downside and Bertrude never showed any interest in getting free anyway, she was just in it do get the Volfred D (but he wasn't interested so whatever).

pyre is more like bastion than transistor in some regards - music is more acoustic strings, artstyle is more colorful, but stages are more psychedelic than the earthier tone of bastion

honestly gameplay is not really comparable, if what you disliked about transistor were the periodic breaks in gameplay from turn(), those are definitely gone but otherwise the 3v3 space jam is totally different from the isometric arpgs that were bastion and transistor

Dalbert's a sweet old man but "nothing wrong" doesn't describe him.

I guess it'd be kind of hard to have a following, considering that you can't even reach the rites without a wagon that's capable of flight.

Though I kind of like that your only audience is the Voice and the bards watching over you.
>>
>>387075281
yeah, there just aren't that many settlements in the downside

everyone's struggling to make ends meet, minus some of the curs and crones - they certainly don't have time to go watch some chumps toss a shiny ball around in areas that may be totally inaccessible to those without a flying wagon

and the imps cheer whenever you pull off an achievement, so we can surmise that they're pretty universal in the downside
>>
>>387075534
They are, but they're only seen in one arena and then are just regulated to giving you extra money if you complete challenges.

Drive/Messenger imps were the fans on the island and that's when they start offering you the challenges too.

Spoiler talk

I don't like how at the end of the game, if you do really poorly in the Rites and the plan goes to shit, the Commenwealth is still easily overthrown by the harpies. Sure, you want an ending with the least amount of casualties, and the game's big theme is that you should keep going no matter what happens because things can still work out, but a big failure of a plan should have more direct consequences. Maybe the Commenwealth stands but it's obvious it may fall one day, or the harpy government is better than the previous government, but still brutal and reform needs to come in time.

it's the telltale formula, your actions didn't really matter in the end, it was all about the characters!

I hate that bullshit but it's a trend people keep accepting, and it's not like reviewers play the game multiple times to experience different endings.

It was a nice touch how the wagon interior changes as you progress, with each new character or area.
>>
>>387076923
Are there not very many variations for the end result of the revolution itself? I've only seen two.

Peaceful success, and semi-peaceful with some death from Harpy intervention.

I assumed that 0% chance of success was basically a massacre.

Yeah, if you mess up and get no one/hardly anyone out of the Downside, it's a massacre, but the harpies still wind up defeating the Commonwealth.

Obviously playing badly effects a bunch of characters on a personal level but I wish it had a larger impact on the ending outcome. It's just text, come on now.

So, any idea if the harp prince is a myth?

How the crap are they not extinct?
>>
>>387089862
Presumably their males have only recently died out. As for how they will survive, well in a good ending Hedwyn and his harp waifu will probably set a precedent where we'd see a lot of harp/human male couples.

The alternative is rape.

I think the Harp Prince is real. You gotta remember that this is a fantasy setting where the only thing that determines if you can leave the Downside is if you're a weird imp or if you play sportsball and a waterfall says you can go up. I can believe that there's just one male harpy who fucks all the other harpies to keep the species alive. It's kinda like the gerudo from Zelda.

That also means harpies probably fuck normal dudes like >>387090163 says.

the ingame models probably aren't totally representative of what they would actually look like, given that ignarius and oralech's horns don't fit inside their masks

conclude what you will from the full sprite
