I can't speak for ICO as I'm not a fan but SotC has a specific control style that is purposely awkward as a kind of immersive experience, imitating the struggle wanderer is going through clinging on to the collosi.
Game Is GOAT, I'm looking forward to the remake next year and I will be playing on classic controls.

The sound, control scheme, art style ect are all part of the experience.

Put it in a similar context where kojima made us have to figure out the code on the cd case, unplugging the controller and putting it into the other slot, and using the rumble feature in MGS1.
The controller and player of the game are just as part of the experience as gfx, gameplay ect.

If you actually play the game it makes sense that the control scheme and camera angles are like how they are, the game would lose the feel if it had a simple control scheme and a free camera.
It also makes doing things like huge jumps or moves with/on agro more spectacular.
the game is an art not just a trivial game.

I played SotC for the first time this year, and I didn't even find the controls awkward. What's even awkward about them? Only Agro's controls were kind of shitty, but everything Wander does on foot is perfect. Also, the remake looks incredibly unnecessary.

They aren't awkward really, just feel counter intuitive until you realize the majority of the gameplay is riding a horse (with secret stunts) and grasping on to a flailing giant.
I realized after the first collosi that the control scheme was set in a way to help tell the story, and feels of arduos actions rather than a more modern control scheme of 1 button to roll, r2 to attack ect
