Why are us Aussies cursed with such terrible international latency..

Why are us Aussies cursed with such terrible international latency..

Every game I try to play with European friends on their servers it's just endless lag.

Will internet connections ever get strong enough for us to play games that aren't in oceanic regions?
>>
It's not a weak internet, it's just distance. Europe is a really long way away. Australia is generally just away from everything except for shithole asian countries and New Zealand.
>>
>>387025260
Will technology ever be able to bridge that divide though? Nearly every multiplayer game I end up playing I run into some south east Asians yelling on the mic.

I've heard of certain clients that act like VPNS for reducing gaming lag but it's a hassle to setup even if it works. Maybe in the future they'll have a more accessible advanced version of this?
>>
Even if you have information travelling at the speed of light with no buffering and no loss and basically direct routing the best you'll ever get is something like 70ms*. Maybe one day if net neutrality goes to shit and some service starts up catered toward low bandwidth low latency connections for games the silver lining will be that you can pay through the nose for ~150ms to everywhere on earth but I wouldn't count on it getting better before it gets worse.

*It's a long time since I did that maths though so maybe verify it yourself.

That's because we're only getting fucking Fibre to the Node
It means you've got fibre all the way up to your street, but it's bottlenecked through the old shitty copper wiring to your house
The fucking government cheaped out on us
>>
>>387026014
that's exactly what i was thinking but it would cost an astronomical amount sadly.

like the other anon mentioned if something like this does eventually happen in order to compensate for costs they will charge a ridiculous amount anyway to access it.

thank you, that's what we generally do but i'm talking more about the bigger picture in years to come and what the potential options might be, especially with gaming industry profits increasing each year you figure they'd want more people locked in with decent internet to keep them fuelling more money into online multiplayer games.

Honestly, I'm still excited to get something better than ADSL2, but it seriously sucks that they decided to cheap out

Internet connectivity in general offers cheaper alternatives to traditional media (print, TV, radio). Murdoch has big stakes in the first two.
>>
Tldr
A few years ago when that fuckwit the mad monk put Cu plugs on the fibre optics. Forever sad. Give up hope
>>
I got NBN

I get 7 ping now
>>
>>387027481
>Faster internet is direct competition to foxtel.
How? Netflix and other video streaming services successfully established itself in Australia on just plain regular ADSL2.

And if Foxtel was going to move into the online streaming service (which they did) then they'd benefit from the government dosh being spent to upgrade the infrastructure.

It almost sounds to me as if Murdoch is just an NBN bogeyman.

Latency in this regard is due to the resistance of the material carrying the signal. Fiber Optic cable has what is called a refractive index that slows the packet speed because they're not shooting the signal in a vacuum from one side of the world to another.

No, blame Rupert Murdoch; the guy that owns the tabloids who astroturfed for the Libs because he also owns Foxtel, and wherever high-speed net goes subscriptions to pay-TV go down, so he did everything he could to sabotage the NBN.

There are always outliers. It's about picking a field that suits your strengths and one that you have realistic expectations about employment for. I had to move states to get my job after my degree, and now with some experience, I'm planning on moving back home because I'm qualified enough to secure a position originally. A few of the people I knew doing my degree with me also understood that they would probably have to move to find graduate positions, but refused to, and all but one have ended up either unemployed or doing unskilled work like retail. Mind you, it was fucking easy to get my job in the other state, but it did require the sacrifice of leaving friends and family behind for a few years, which is something a lot of people don't want to do.

unless you plan on drilling through the earth, the speed of light dictates that the best possible ping to the place opposite you on earth is ~133ms.

of course, realistically thats not what matters. sydney to london and sydney to nyc, which are both a similar distance, could be <90ms if you had fibre optic cable laid out straight between them, and <60 if you somehow had the light travel at vacuum/air speed.

It is really competitive if you're trying to get a specific position right out the gate rather than just going to the work. Most ambulance providers want 2 years on road experience before they'll hire you as a qualified paramedic, and graduate positions are scarce. However, I've got good looking prospects in the northern territory or England. At the moment, English recruiters are hunting for Aussie paramedics desperately and will pay your way to get over there. The actual pay is pretty shit, and I don't really like England, but the experience I would get in a busy city like London more than makes up for it in the short term. I figure I'll spend my 2 years there or NT, and then apply with the provider in my home city and try land a spot here to continue off. Northern territory is a bit more difficult to get, and I would have to work in bumfuck nowhere for a year or two, but the pay is ridiculous. I doubt I would get great experience in a small town, though. Kind of a toss up. Apparently, of the 13 people who applied to go to England from last years grads, all 13 got jobs.

I think the most difficult part of my degree was my placement in a nursing home. The female nurses just constantly bitched and complained and refused to do fuck all. We had one old man suffer a cardiac arrest and the nurse who was meant to be keeping an eye on him didn't even fucking know his name, much less any medical history, for when the ambulance came to grab him. She had been there for years, too.

Could be worse. I pay $70 a month for this shit. I feel lucky when I can watch Youtube videos without having to stop them and wait for them to load. Some days it's dial up speed. Not even that remote, this is in the Blue Mountains 1 hour from Sydney. NBN is coming, but it's had many problems up here from what I've heard.

This country is a joke, for much more than just our shitty internet. People overseas have a distorted view of our country. We are not the easy going larrikins we pretend to be. This country is the worst kind of nanny state, thought policed, depressive nation you could imagine. I wish I didn't pay taxes that support it.
>>
>>387025496
Until quantum computing/networking, no. Our current technology is restricted by the speed of light. Even with the best lines and connections you're still gunna always have the same amount of distance to cover.

My advice is if you play on overseas servers go with SEA, Japanese, Korean or West Coast US. Anything else is just too laggy, with the exception of Eve Online because of the way they wrote their netcode.

>all my classmates have 4 day weekends every week
>centrelink call me in one day
>tell me that they're gunna cut me off unless I start looking for a 2nd job
And this was in 2006. I'd hate to think how it is now.

better
Well, easier to keep your bludge money, but less help for those not abusing the system.

Man I'd kill for an AusStation but we just couldn't sustain a pop. Odds are it'd probably only net in 20-30 people turning normie peak hours and then die out after midnight.

I have played on a privately hosted one in sydney that was put up for shits and giggles, having low ping makes the game 300x better.

Just gotta hope my wife gets her certs and a H1B and one day I can be robust.

Yeah, it's just the distance. The earth has a circumference of 40,000,000m, and the speed of light is 300,000,000m/s, so the absolute fastest a signal can travel half way around the earth (20,000km) is about 66 milliseconds.

A signal needs to travel there and back again, so the absolute minimum ping time you can get if you want to play with a proper country is ~130ms. Not enough to play FPS.

You think that's bad? I went from the same speed to a place where at peak hours I max out at around 70-100kb/s. Hell, sometimes, even in the middle of the night I can't break 300kbps or watch a Youtube video without stuttering.

I live 15 minutes from the CBD.
