>6 years since Vita's release
>NVIDIA working on Tegra chips which can bring handhelds up to just beyond Xbox 360 graphical quality as demonstrated by their own handhelds and now the Nintendo Switch
>Neither Sony nor Microsoft is taking advantage of this fact to create their own low cost handhelds and shove a bunch of ports on them as well as make a couple of new titles
Is there just no market for this? I'd really like a handheld with more guts that could play games from around 2004-2012. I'd like to settle on a GPD Win but that's not quite the same thing.
All handhelds failed excepts Nintendo's Gameboys, 3DS and Switch.

Well console manufacturers typically don't make that much from hardware sales, it mostly comes from royalties from any game that gets sold on their system. Mobile is dominating Japan, Sony is probably reluctant because of how the Vita underperformed, Nintendo is backing off handheld with the switch, which is a 2-in-1 at a higher price point, and MS don't know what the shit they're doing anymore, entering the handheld market would be hard, and they're more focused on making Surfaces at this point.

Vita was very strong for its time, people just weren't interested. People who like mobile games either buy a Nintendo because of 2D Mario and Pokemon or are playing Temple Run-clones on their smartphones.

Vita is still getting more games than the Switch.

Smartphones made them redundant.
I really hope the Switch becomes more popular.
So that Sony can see there's still a market for dedicated portable consoles.
