But it broke even, and that's all that matters.

These movies are being made because they're safe investments. Everyone knows what Angry Birds is, or what Emojis are, or what Fruit Ninja is about. You don't have to spend truckloads on advertising trying to tell people what the movie is about; they already fucking know.
So you spend a couple million on it (way less than you would for a regular film adaptation of another IP), get some B-list animation studio to shit it out for cheap, and you put it on the market. Once it hits China, you're guaranteed to make bank because those dumbfucks will watch literally anything.

I was talking about this last night with /co/.
This movie could be good IF: They got a writer who did not give a fuck.

Picture if the Fruit Ninja movie was about a gigantic homage to old Ninja movies. I think that's really what separates these movies, they can make a good movie if they just found a writer who wouldn't toe corporate culture line and instead made something that was fun.
>>
I'm not even a little bit surprised. The explosion of global pop culture has had big effects on Hollywood. In this new climate, Hollywood knows that the only things that make money are titles that already exist in the culture's collective unconsciousness. They simply don't invest in original scripts anymore, everything is a sequel, remake, reboot or film adaption. They'll use anything. Video game titles, board games, brand names, fucking anything as long as Joe Blow will say "hey I recognize that".

FUCK YOU IT'S FOREVER

The suits don't allow most things, but they also have a history of being incredibly lazy. Which is why said writer would not need to give a single fuck about what happens to his career after it comes out.
>>
>>387011421
It did around the '80s actually, and before that movies were one good idea and 30 rehashes of the same idea with the same succesful movie star. nothing changed, just adapted. When there are a lot of money invested movie lobbies don't want to risk a flop, they want to sell.

God fucking dammit, even in fucking ancient Rome they rehashed the same shows over and over to be sure they were liked. Artists that did something actually original(usually with eastern influences)were frown upon.
Nothing fucking changes.

Remember most normies have no hobbies, women have no hobbies, the other half of the normies are not autistic enough to stick to their hobby all through their free time, so they either go to see shitty gimmicky mobile game/reboot/sequel #9 because they have nothing else to do or get pressured by their perpetual bored girlfriends to go see them.
>>
>>387012051
I know a couple manchildren who don't appear to have any hobbies at all. What the fuck do these people do?
>>
>>387005583
So I've struggled with this for years. Movies that seem like they shouldn't be a thing, or are critically panned yet get sequels, make a decent return on investment to warrant their creation. It's why you see really good actors taking shit movie concept gigs. Just look at David Cross' wiki. He admits that Alvin and the Chipmunks paid of a few summer homes.

It's extremely lame, but to survive monetarily in this world you have to abandon any sense of ethic.

Correct. The old business model used to be selling movies on star power. They would rehash the same ideas, but they at least had the balls to make up a new name for it. Now it's all about brand power, the title of the movie is everything. I'm afraid these aren't my opinions, it's a reality of holywood filmmaking. The stats back it up.

People don't understand that marketing budgets aren't included in the posted movie budgets they're looking up.

They easily sunk 50-100 million into marketing. $20 million profit off movie production after 2 weeks is abysmal in hollywood standards.

This is the era where every other blockbuster is crossing the half billion mark easily, $20 million profit is bullshit to them.

Even without marketing they're still at a huge loss. Typical theater cuts ramp from around 30% for the first week to 50+% after a few weeks. Opening weekend was $24m so the studio probably got around $16m, and maybe an extra $20m from the remaining weeks. As far as international, you get even less. I'd assume the publisher's total revenue in this case is around $40m total, not including any taxes, distribution fees, marketing, etc. which are likely also over $40m. I'd expect a writeoff in the earnings report of around -$50m to -100m
