The orbs are most likely a placeholder while they test the servers and work on adding more features to the "multiplayer", customizable character models for example.

It could be cool but it's never going to live up to peoples' fantasies. A lot of people thought they were gonna do things like be pirates waiting in ambush on a planet for other players while building up their base and stuff like that or being a trader but the game just doesn't work that way.
