Most monsters based in the Doom style are toned, and more often than not have unusually nice asses.

I see the '8-bit' aesthetic as more of a means of managing resources, rather than an ends in itself. If we could, I'm sure we'd probably all be making massive fully animated 3D world or 2D masterpieces. If you're more technically or design oriented, or you're in a one-man project though, you basically don't have any options when it comes to art. If you have the talent to do art, that's great, but an increase in aesthetic scope or rise in fidelity will cost you man hours. 9 sprites of my rat there took me about 3 hours to make and implement at a casual pace. If you made the canvas size larger, or if your style was more complex, that's more hours that have to go in every single art asset, which exponentially raises the time it takes to do what may be the least enjoyable thing in the project. You could outsource, or commission the art, of course, but that's not always an option for your budget.
This also applies to sound as well, though on a smaller scale. It's a lot quicker, cheaper, and easier to generate sound effects from BFXR than find stock ones or go the extremely expensive route and get a studio to make them.

Working on a character rig. Let me tell you, nothing is more demotivating for an animator than to have to rig his own character, or receive a bad rig for it.

At the moment I'm just catching up with what I managed to do with the character in Cinema 4D (couldn't export the skeletal mesh out of that program in any way) with a rig in Maya, made 100% manually. There has to be an easier way to do this.

After I'm done with the rig in Maya, I'll go through getting the character into UE4 and recreate morph targets for his face.

It's really just to have the essentials for all types of movement available, should I have more ideas for animations. I encountered certain limitations with the Cinema 4D rig, like the lack of a palm raise controller, which made a crawling animation particularly tedious to make. I want my imagination to be the limit of my animations, not the rig.

I like the idea of sketching out animations, though. If only it didn't take so long, because I'm not particularly skilled at drawing yet.

It would actually be easier if I aimed for realism, because I wouldn't have to bother with all these stretchy limbs for overshoots and exaggerations in the animations. Other than the smart foot roll controller, which is essential for all characters with feet, the stretchy limbs have been the worst, especially considering the nightmarish root scale calculations involved with them.

If anyone's interested, here are the 4 animation loops I made until I realized I can't do anything with them outside of Cinema 4D. Notice how his hair is cut short at the neck. This was another major issue with Cinema 4D - there is simply no way to weight paint it, while Maya supposedly has third party scripts that do it automatically.

So, very early stages of a game. I'm going to need more people eventually. I'm working on character design, story, music, as well as rigging and animation, when what I really want to do is employ others to do tasks other than animation after we have thoroughly discussed how each and every detail of the game should be.
