You can disable all the wacky ass monsters and fungi and bugs etc. if you just want zombie survival. In general
>Don't go out at night, zombies can see you but you can't see them
>Go through a house and close the door behind you to trap zombies inside, then light it on fire
>Push bookcases and shit in front of doors/windows and cover them with sheets to block LoS
>Break/deconstruct furniture you can't use for nails and boards for barricades
>Get a shopping cart and load it up
>Put a ton of blankets and pillows in a pile if you don't have a bed, you'll use them when you sleep
>Grab all the fucking books you can
>Find the selfpowered nightlight and stand on it on the same space so you can read at night without drawing attention

Hiding does work perfectly fine, but you usually don't have the resources to hide, which means you need to do your own risk management. ie. If you go to town centers, you will find very strong enemies but also a lot of loot, where as if you stick to country side areas you dont find a lot of resources and only weak zombies.

Anyhow OP, I quite liked Dying Light. I don't know if you consider it a full-blooded RPG because you don't actually create your own character but it was actually pretty good.

Someone mentioned Dead State too, I found it to be quite boring and repetitive. Wouldn't recommend, but that's just me.

However, Project Zomboid is the closest thing out there that you'll get to a REAL zombie apocalypse. It's absolutely great, but it's a real shame that updates are sparse.
