How does the column(pillar?) system feel? Is it as rewarding as developing the cities in Civ 5.

I have some faith that there's gonna be something like what you're talking about soon. Civ 6, in it's current state, feels more geared towards players new to the series and isn't as in depth as Civ 5 was, with both DLC and mechanics. I still like both though.

I always have issues with getting a strong military. Whenever I try, some other issues pop up (no housing, other nations being stupid, etc). Do you build up yours mid-late game, or are you starting out early.

You should be building units from the beginning for defense against both barbarians and the AIs.

The biggest problem for new players is understanding what you NEED, not just what you'd like. Your cities aren't going to be "perfect" especially not on higher difficulties where the AI gets massive production bonuses.
