If everyone else is a generic character and you look cool it gives you prestige and people notice you as being something above what you actually are, I remember buying a fancy outfit on Paladins near launch and playing like shit.

It's an ego thing. If you're just good at the game and win consistently, you get the rush of satisfaction from knowing that you are good. But most people aren't good, and so they get cosmetics as a way to still feel superior to other players. Even if it is entirely artificial, it gives them a sense of being somehow above them, like "oh you plebeian with your default skin I have the ultra waifu trash skin that was only 4.99 on the in-game store that's right it's exclusive to the cash shop stay away from me poor people."

Don't blame the games, they're merely exploiting a fault in human nature for profit, blame the humans who are buying into it.

No. Everyone copies, and Overwatch is no exception, but they didn't go full on Chink style ripoff. I fully expect this coming from a Chinese or Korean company. The artstyle used to be ways cooler, they tried to blend the fantasy genre and the sci-fi genre where their "renewable" energy was, the crystals that each character has in their models/weapon in some forms. Ruckus, Viktor, Tyra, Fernando, Skye, Kinessa is the biggest example too are relics of the past artstyle. Since then they've just been going for a fantasy artstyle, no more blends.. nothing. I'd have expected a cool backstory for viktor that says "Viktor is a russian soldier sends in by the soldier government some years ago as to protect a base they set up in the portals that opened under strange condition on earth that day". I've just seen ruckus redesign, and while i like it.. it's a proof that they are truly going for a fantasy design with the woods, face.. and it disappoints me a little.
