So the setting is post-apocalyptic. Shortly before the war, humanity began experimenting with a new radioactive element called etherium. The effects of this stuff on the human body can range from superhuman reflexes to abnormal hair growth. This guy became a god the day the bombs fell. He was in an etherium lab playing around with a reactor and refused to evacuate. Etherium boms + etherium reactor= god. He can talk to those 'touched' by the Ether, his version of the Void, in other words those irradiated that didn't die.
>>
>>386966829
Well, then it can depend on their society. Is this an official name that some higher institution have made up? Was it the church, the royal family, the republic, the guild association..?
Is it a name that the poor people murmur to each other while at the tavern? Do the wise women warn the farmers about him, the fathers warn their daughters?
Are there written books about him, is he only known in a single culture/country, how well-known is he, was he a human once, etc.

Think about what role he plays to what people. He did something to make them name him - is his name a warning, has it to do with the places he appear, his appearance, his actions..?

You could easily make up something like "The Skulker", "Whisperer" or "Shade", but consider his role. What would they call him and why?

He could just be "the voice", if that's all most people hear/see of him. That might even be a phrase, as in "he's hearing voices, but at least he's not hearing The Voice". Nobody needs to explain what voice you're talking about - it's just the voice. Or perhaps something that describes the voice - hollow voice, mocking voice, lecturing, kindly, etc.

If he still has human shape he could be called something about how he's changed. He's the shapeless one, the glowing one, the raggedy man, etc.

Do people see him or just hear him. What would a typical person encountering him think about him? Are we talking about a few chosen or gatherings. Does he talk every single day or a few times a year?
>>
>>386968874
This, how he interacts with people matters a lot more in a post apocalyptic world since widespread communication doesn't exist anymore. People will likely name him based on what he does for them, be it granting powers, destroying enemies or simply offering advice. If the time period is soon after the apocalypse there may be some people that would believe he is a deity of a pre war religion.
>>
Whatever he was called when he was a human.
God being called Maurice is way cooler than some tryhard edgy name.

A post apocalyptic novel. World is destroyed by nuclear warfare and survivors that have been exposed to the radiation are changed in some way. After James and his friends are forced to abandon their home by US army remnants, they embark on a quest to deliver an ex-army general to a kingdom with the vague promise on being rewarded a new place to live. They soon find themselves in conflict with bounty hunters, wasteland crazies, and the Soviet empire.

people will give nameless things names anyway.

The only possibilities for this being remaining nameless are
1)nobody knows about it, but what point is there in writing about it
2)it strikes down anyone giving it a name, and makes it very publicly know that it does not want to be named
3)the story is written by the likes of JK rowling or worse

It's a revenge story about a disfigured madman who protects a young noble girl he ravished. She wants to get back at her family for being banished and he wants to stay by her side because she can look at him without puking her guts out. The setting is low fantasy, and I try to stay grounded as much as I can. /tg/ is pretty great for inspiration.

>Always wanted to write something but I've never taken the first step
Honestly I jumped into unprepared, only had the rough idea and grand lines, but the more you write, the more you see the difficulties and questions you need to ask yourself to progress.
I'm now 200 pages in and nowhere near finished but I'm having fun and going slow but steady.

Since this is basically a /lit/ thread, I'm trying to flesh out the story of a game I'm fixing to make. What would a utopian society that has robots automating everything be like? Would there still be jobs and money? What would people do?
>>
>>386976913
>nobody knows about it, but what point is there in writing about it

>>
>>386978997
Manufacturing jobs would probably be a thing of the past, since robots would just manufacture everything.
But jobs like teaching, writing, entertainment and so on would still exist.
Also, people would need to design and make the robots better, so there's that.

That sounds a lot like Praetoria from City of Heroes.

Basically people ended up either focusing on arts/sciences/culture, or decided to try to climb the ranks of the world government. You didn't have to work, but if you did you got special privileges and powers. Check it out if you want.
>>
>>386978997

Would there be money? Or would people just work because they want to work?
What would be money's purpose in a perfect society?
>>
>>386980057
Would people have access to everything?
If so, no money.
>>
>>386980057
I thought about that because I wanted to create a similar setting, and I came to the conclusion that it could either be a communism style production system where everybody gets a minimum package ensuring that you have enough to eat and live, and can get more depending on some conditions like working, or occupying important positions, or a full blown capitalist wet dream where you produce so much you can afford to waste everything because everybody has money and products are dirt cheap.
It also depends if the country has to interact with other states, which can require transaction and thus capitals
>>
>>386980057
It depends on how exactly idyllic the society is.
If the concept of scarcity is gone entirely, then probably there wouldn't be any currency since everybody can get whatever they want whenever they want. Like you said, people would probably just work because they want to feel fulfilled or have an impact or something. Most people won't do literally nothing.

If it's just basic needs that are met, then yeah probably money would exist in some form to get more luxurious things.

>Like what?
Similar to benefits you get in real life when you're in a position of power. Having stronger influence over the direction that society moves in, having control over a group of people to accomplish your goals, etc. Some goals require resources like capital and manpower, and in Praetoria the way they get those things is by climbing the ranks of the world's meritocracy.

>I'm writing a novel which was inspired by a vidya game
>I'm going to come to /v/ to ask for ideas to name a character taken from a vidya game

It's weird, but I can tell this novel is probably going to be shit.

I'll give you a hint though: The Outsider doesn't have a name, he has a title, because he's more a force than he is a person. Characters like the Outsider need to be used sparingly, and only in times that their presence moves the plot. They are a walking Deus Ex Machina, and if they aren't used correctly they will destroy the story.
>>
>>386966460
Nobody ever said the Outsider is omnipotent, omnipresent or all-seeing. You just immediately jumped to that conclusion because his powers are mysterious and not clearly defined.
The Outsider manifests in human form and even was human at one point. There's no reason why he wouldn't need a name, or for his name to not be pronounceable.

>>386966217
Rather than picking a name, you could come up with a way to refer to him uniquely without narrowing it down to a specific.

For example: he tells you his name, but nobody can grasp it clearly. Everybody who refers to him gets the impression that it's a different name, so the main character thinks he's called GREGORY whereas another character thought he heard ANDREW, and so on and so forth. If you write every different name capitalized, or in another way that makes it consistently recognizable, so that the reader understands it's always meant to be him.
>>
>>386980392
If we're going commie style, would there even be enough jobs for everybody? Considering that the robots would handle the dangerous or undesirable jobs, that's a large chunk of them gone. You also have to consider that because of it being a utopia, that the life expectancy increases and in turn the population should increase.
But then there is also the fact that most of the population may not even want to work. In which case, then it really just seems like I could decide whether there are enough jobs or not.

Make his Name and identity a plot point, where the entire story his character revolves around trying to figure out a name for himself.

And then if you make it a series at a climax/crucial moment in the story let him snap his fingers and reveal it.

I don't think so. A large part of the population would be unneeded, an excedent. Parasytes today, but only an affordable reserve in this utopian society. The people not good enough for the remaining jobs would either be content with not being forced to work and still get enough shit and comfort, or forced to deal with it via social pressure, or drugs

Sorry, it's not really a book, it's just an area in a game.

Reading some of the quest chains and stuff will give you some more insight though. It's a pretty neat concept.

Good luck, anon.
