is there a game with a more beautiful art style than the dishonored games?
Short answer: yes
Long answer: yes, a lot
Transistor, Furi, Journey, vanilla TF2
>>386955291
>Furi
LOL? that game looks awful, especially in motion. Holy fuck it has such terrible animation.
Dishonored does look pretty fucking nice.
Reminder that the art director was the dude who did all the Combine concept art for Half Life 2. One of those "can't unsee" things.
Shame the sequel was butt.

Those menus though

>Dishonored
>Posts King's Row
>>386955128
I really do like it but Transistor has to be my all time favourite. The golden Klimt like patterns, the softer blue, it's just beautiful
>>386955764
It's basically the same game with some new additions.
It was lazy and in some case unoriginal, of course, but... "butt"?! Nah!
>whalepunk
>good
>>386955291
>Journey
OP was talking about actual games
>>386955128
>>386955676
Viktor Antonov is a genius and should be in more projects.
>>386955128
Bloodborne
>>386955128
Yes. Depends on what youre into. But its pretty neat.
>>386955959
Too bad the game is boring
>>386955676
thats funny
because I always got a half life 2 vibe from it

I think, the ending was the worst part. I hoped for some fallout style shit, because I rescued Hypathia, killed Paolo an the Overseer Guy, saved Stilton, and other Shit. I was really pissed.
>>386956103
No, and fuck you sonyboi
Not my favorite but, whether you like the game or not, Spec Ops the Line made a lot of scenes really feel apocalyptic through the art direction alone.
Plus all those graffitis and little details scattered around gave it this great sensation of people actually still living in it.
>>386956126
His concept art for Dishonored and Half Life 2 is pretty much impossible to separate. They both have this really industrialized look, a lot of vertical lines to emphasize the size, harsh lines like there was some anger in the drawing. He's pretty great.
His paintings in-game are also great.
Dishonored was pretty, no doubt about it, but I'm pretty sure we can find a bunch of comparably pretty games.
The Void for an instance.
SpecOps The Line actually looked really damn beautiful too.
Old Homeworld was mesmirisingly beautiful.
Pathologic has ugly-ass graphics but gorgeous art direction.
Bastion was fantastic.
HL2 had actually amazing art direction too, especially for it's time. Figures, since both were done mainly by Antonov.

Should I play The Void?
The Dishonored games are so good. Death of the Outsider is almost certainly the last we'll ever see of them. I'm gonna miss them.
>>386957732
>Should I play The Void?
Are you suicidal?
>>386957732
It's a cool unknown game
>>386957907
>>386957990
Conflicting opinions.
>>386958062
The Void is incredibly depressing and frustrating on just about every thinkable level. It does not play fair, it does not explain itself clearly, in fact it can intentionally screw you over.
All of it while being consistently surreal, incredibly bleak, vague, and to most people probably incredibly pretentious.
It's rarely fun, rarely exciting (though it is pretty in it's morbid, bleak way) and rarely feels like it makes sense.
It's intentionally trying to make the player feel miserable - through it's visuals, it's story (or what it has instead of one), it's gameplay.
In the end, it does not do those things without reason. It has a point, it's beautiful, sad, and if you pay attention, it can reward you with the kind of catharsis that you'll rarely experience in videogames.
But man it's not making shit easy for the player.

This is a decent taste of what the game feels like.

That description sold it to me. I'll have to try Pathologic as well. Heard good things. Is the HD version on Steam good?
>>386955291
>Furi
LMAO
>>386958623
Nah it's just shit.
>>386959149
Yep. No point trying any other version than the HD one on Steam (or Gog) until the complete remake is out. The older version is just the same game with lower resolution textures and worse translation.
There is another thing you can sink your teeth in: Marble Nest, the proof-of-concept for the remake. It's also on Steam, for free, and can be finished in about two hours, but has no save functionality so you have to finish it in a single run. It showcases the engine, art direction, tone and some of the basic mechanics that they are aiming for with the remake. It has virtually no optimization though, a lot of the systems are not implement (including things like door animations), U.I. is still a prototype etc...
Still, it's worth looking into. As always, IPL over-did it and created something unique and somewhat beautiful.
>>386959812
Sure, I'm convinced.
>>386956494
Cool stuff anon, thanks for sharing.
>>386955128
The only single player game I completed in the last 2 year.
Its that good, visually and mechanically.
>>386958623
>In the end, it does not do those things without reason. It has a point
>which I won't bother mentioning ;^)
Sure it does.
>>386959837
>Marble Nest
I'll try it as well. Thanks anon.
>>386960062
>which I won't bother mentioning ;^)
Well, I don't exactly want to spoil the entire game now. The point iswhat the entire experience leads to, it's a product of every level of the game (from art direction past core gameplay loop - including some mechanical aspects that are revealed only very late into the game past the actual plot) and as such, explaining it would rob the people who had not played it of the joy of discovering and putting it together themselves. The Void is, in many ways, a giant puzzle. Figuring out the purpose behind of all of it is part of the experience.
>>386956048
Doesn't matter that journey is not what you personally consider a game, it has an amazing art style
>>386955291
the art style of vanilla tf2 isnt as interesting as the art style for most other because of the fact that tf2's art style was designed to be non distracting, and therefore is unable to tell any story through art direction. take for example pic related: someone with no knowledge of NV could still determine many things by analyzing it; the area is very old, but has still had general upkeep such as adding fences. If fences are needed the area must be dangerous. Futhermore, if someone added fences than someone must have lived there or is living there currently. In TF2 (and many other games) the art style does not serve as a form of story telling.
>>>386956103
Unironically Anarchy Online.
I know it's over 17 years old and the graphics are ass compared to games today, but that's what makes it's art style so compelling. Even with low poly count I still find myself in awe of areas in the Shadowlands and it's spiritual/alien/primordial style, or the desert/cyberpunk wastes of Rubi-Ka. Every place felt unique and still does, I only wish MMOs weren't dead so more people could have built similar things.
I wish Dishonored was more aggresive with the painterly thing.
>>386960634
I agree to an extent, since I blame that more on the fact that it's a multiplayer game so there's obviously not going to be any story.
The comics are a good example of the art style being used to its potencial. Every character leaps off the screen, the scenarios have that great 60's industrialized look.
>>386960321
Yeah if there's some stupid fucking plot reason why a game can't be fun, it doesn't redeem its downfalls.
>>386960321
Ya, not to mention the delicious waifus. You can get them nude and shiiiiet by adding an xml called girl.xml under "The Void\data\Properties\World" with an entry "<property name="ButterflyEnabled" value="0" />" for each girl.
>>386960960
It's not so much a plot reason as it is the reason of the existence of the very game itself.
It might surprise, but media don't exist solely for the purpose of gratification and basic entertainment. Games are no exception.
But if you want just fun game, then sure: The Void is the second worst choice you could ever make. It's a niche game with niche appeal. Amazing at what it does, but only a small portion of the gamer public will be looking for this type of experience to begin with.
>>386960972
Yeah. They are sweet.Until they start betraying you, or commit suicide.
>>386955128
>mfw coming back to the bar after a mission
top tier comfy
>>386957802
No, they said it will be the last of the Corvo / Emily / Daud / Billie arc
we'll get a Dishonored 3 for sure with a new cast
>>386955128
I mean it's a good artstyle, but I don't think i'd call it "beautiful". Which isn't a bad thing, I was just under the impression the games draw a lot of strength from being morbid, macabre and ugly in lots of really interesting and engaging ways. Seems like it would be difficult to compare meaningfully to games with different values.
>>386955128
Sober the fuck up.
>>386955128
As much as /v/ shits on it, Bioshock 3 is a beautiful game as is Bioshock 1.
Dishonored doesnt even beat Thief 1 or 2 in terms of aesthetics.
>>386955128
