Honestly I'm content just accepting the game's flaws and savescumming my way through all the worst parts. The only thing that I thought was really shitty about the game when I got back to it after a long time was how difficult it was to knock people out from behind without alerting them, but once I found the sweet spot in their lower back it wasn't too bad.

Vanilla vanilla DX just looks dated because it doesn't support the resolutions of nowadays, etc. But if you mod it to include DX11 support and (this isn't actually necessary, but helps) replace some textures, it's also perfectly fine.

The only problem with vanilla DX is that it's piss fucking easy to abuse the living fuck out of. The DT sword being one easy example of what I'm talking about, plus the AI is slow to react sometimes. GMDX fixes these.

I just max out the pistol with every attachment you can get and combine that with the sword. You don't need anything else, snipe across the map with a pistol and melee it up in first person.

Fuck everybody who says this game aged like milk, I'm playing with just Deus Exe and New Vision and the game is perfect, ezcept for the fact that I have to run around with a knife like a slasher villain because I can't hit shit with my stealth pistol and 30-06 ammo is in short supply.

But really, no.

Pistol is bread and butter weapon. Plentiful ammo. Can be substituted with Sniper Rifle if you really want, but the Rifle is so much larger in the inventory and has less ammo, but can be silenced.
Prod and Baton fullfill non-lethal silent takedown role fine. Prod is good for takedowns you're not sure are going to work. Like on MiBs and Commandos.
Crossbow is ranged take down, really useful in some scenarios. Even if an alarm is triggered, you can sit still, putting darts through everyone's skulls then running off until they fall unconscious.
GEP gun is the master key of the game, and ultimate robot killer. WP rockets have use to in small rooms filled with lots of enemies.

It's one of those classics that if you play through the game about half way (10 hours in) you'll say to yourself "damn, I get why this is a classic". I could spend ages writing out why it's good but people have been saying it's good for 17 years. I couldn't possibly say anything that hasn't been said already. Once you are immersed in the story and setting and you get a handle on the gameplay you'll feel why it's good. Just play it past liberty island.
