saints row will always feel like the ultimate example to me because in only four games (five if you count gat out of hell as a game and not a standalone DLC) it managed to go from somewhat realistic to completely off the rails to the point where the "canon" ending of the series is a complete wipe of everything that happened because they couldn't take it any further than they already did
