I love Megaman but don't really like RPGs. Is this series worth getting into? I've played a bit of BN1 somewhat (got past Number Man), and I'm loving the combat but I don't like the dungeon stuff, and the story is juvenile
>>
>>386897754
It's barely an RPG so yes
>>
It's not even an RPG.
>>
You're probably better off just skipping to 2 or 3. The gameplay gets much better but the story remains just as vapid and boring.

>story
It was made aimed at japanese children during a time cellphone were all the rage, similarily to Digimon.
It grows into you though, especially when EXE starts to parallel it's original universe (Evil Energy used to create Dark Chips, for example).

Rockman.EXE WS is a retelling of this with classic Mega Man controls.

The first game is a bit awkward in terms of gameplay and dungeon design, some people skip the first one altogether, but the later games, especially 2, 3, and 6, polish it to be smooth and enjoyable

As for the seriousness of the plot, it varies depending on how far into each game you are, just enjoy it for what it is, and look up stuff on pixiv if you ever want something more

I was a skeptic at first too, and now it's one of my favorite game series aside from the other megaman series
>>
>>386897754
>the story is juvenile
So was the classic Mega Man. BN is just a mirror what-if world in which Dr. Light went for Networks (and got laid) instead of robots, while Wily's Robot Master proposal got rejected.
>>
6=3>2>5>4>1
>>
>>386897754
It's an action game with a card-based weapon system and hit points. It's less of an RPG than Zelda.
>>
>>386897754
The sequels make the combat much better, dungeons somewhat better, but the story will always be juvenile crud. Still, the quality leap from 1 to 2 is massive all things considered, and if you find 1 enjoyable, 2 will certainly feel great if not downright excellent.
>>
>>386899407
>4 > 1
I will never get over how fucking wrong this is.
A slightly more polished battle system does not make up for the extremely tedious gameplay and endless repetition.

3 is the best "dungeons" and difficulty but is a bit of a mess.
6 has the most refined combat by a mile and has tons of fun extra, but the campaign is anemic.
2 is the most balanced entry.
1 is possibly the best in terms of structure, but the battle system is archaic and the regular net maps are awful.
5 is like 3 but with bad SRPG missions, worse maps, and less meaningful content.
>>
>>386900076
>slightly more polished battle system
It's heaven and earth in comparison.
>>
>>386900323
It could play like DMC3 for all I care, the actual content is fucking dogshit.

You are a shallow whore for letting grayed out icons, some dumb fusion forms and more interesting chips take precedence over basic fucking game design.
>>
>>386900619
What is a more basic, more important part of game design than fucking gameplay?

Scenario.
Level design.
Engagement.

DMC4 is slightly less satisfying than DMC3 because its level design isn't as good. In the same vein, BN4's scenarios are fucking DOGSHIT. I don't care if the gameplay is slightly better, dealing with Video Man's garbage or that shitty little chef brat isn't fun.

The story in all of the games is bad. The main appeal is the battle system (this only gets good in BN3) and exploring the internet.

3 and 6 are the best games in the series. 1 and 2 are worth a quick playthrough just to get to grips with the mechanics, characters etc.

Skip battle network 1, you aren't missing much and the gameplay only improves from here
BN2 and 3 are the best games out of the 6 and you can start with either
BN4 is extremely flawed in so many differerent ways (namely, having to beat the game MULTIPLE times to get to the post-game)
BN5 changes the formula with liberation missions but the core gameplay is the same
BN6 goes back to the BN2-3 times and is a good game

like, even X5, for all its faults, still has fairly solid stage design

5 had far better chip code combos than 6. It was only worse because souls were worse.

The chip codes in 6 were only really good on Falzar. Its crosses charge chips were built for combos while Gregars AoEs sucked dog dick. In 5 both were playable.

Shine in the Dark is one my favorite themes of all time. I love how in the deepest parts of the Undernet, the secret area is a beautiful and elegant place filled with bright colors, white and blue, that makes for a lovely juxtaposition toward the dark tones of the undernet. It's a shame we'll never have another game with a post game as meaty as the main game. Not when budgets are getting ever so bigger, and DLC exists.

Capcom was really only known to people who actually played video games, it was always quite obscure until EVO really exposed and put SF and Marvel on bigger pedestals, that's what the normies are really into. What's more, those two games have gotten ridiculously easy compared to the likes of say SFA2, so they eat it up real easy.

There's also just little things with the interface that matter so much when you don't even realize it.

in BN1, * code didn't exist and chip codes were only displayed when you cursored over a chip on the custom screen. You kind of take for granted being able to see all of your chip codes at a glance. Also I guess BN2 went a litle overboard with * code because anything and everything could technically come in * code.

3: Blue gives you Folderbak, unquestionably the most OP chip in existence, but White has Ground Style instead of Shadow, which is actually interesting.

4: Depends on who you like more for double souls, but the game is a chore regardless. Red Sun gives you Fire/Guts/Roll/Wind/Thunder/Search while Blue Moon gives you Aqua/Number/Metal/Wood/Junk/Proto

5: Also a soul preference choice, but the plot is clearly written around Colonel more than it is Protoman.

6: another form preference. Gregar crosses are more about brute force and Falzar's are more about gimmicks.

Yeah, no, I don't disagree, they'd run out of material pretty fast, and there were a few good things. Program Advances being something you needed to practice in order to use properly, for example, was a good way to "balance" the fact that the operator isn't feeding in 5 random fucking chips.

However, all those decisions mentioned above were absolutely retarded and the worst way to handle things. There's more than that, of course - Gospel in its entirety, for example - but just generally the show was a string of bad execution one thing after another. Very disappointing as a fan of the games.

>>
>>386929239
Network transmission is a classic megaman platformer disguised as a BN game.

Starting out early game is a chore because your buster is worthless and chips take forever to load up, but once you get some upgrades, it starts playing like it should (using your buster, using chips as supplements). That being said it's a lot of fun, the difficulty is pretty high and the music is great. It takes cues from classic games like having iceman's stage involve the disappearing blocks and quickman's using the death lasers

I was recently brainstorming an idea of a game in the same vein of BN, except involving spirits and mysticism, with decks of magical cards as weapons. Instead of a NetNavi, you'd have something resembling an Avatar or Guardian Spirit. Instead of jacking in to the internet world, you'd project into the spirit world and fight apparitions and demons. Some cards would give you access to mystical weapons, stronger cards would let you summon monsters.

Alas, one of those ideas doomed to forever stay trapped inside one's head...

I once got a good idea for a "new BN game", where you'd play as some sort of a knight, and then your opponents would be "X Knight", so that we'd translate the Mega Man vibe and be able to easily make bosses in the same vein.
