Actually it had pretty good games, but there were only a few and were contained in a few genres so everyone remembers those few games as opposed to Playstation which had so many good games everyone had a different experience with it and varied combinations of libraries.

PS new to market to the kids who grew up with sega and nintendo who were now teens, and nintendo knew what they had been doing for a decade well.
Sega crashed and burned unfortunatly.

Irony that i was becoming a teen, mesmerized by the new flashy and innovative PS1 titles and graphics, but at the end of the gen I was playing the nintendo with my friends couch co op.
In retrospect i can honestly say N64 was the better console.

Childhood nostalgia and people are horrible at separating their experiences from objectivity. It's why Gamecube has such a cult fanbase here too even though that was shit but they remember it was all they had growing up so it had to be godly.

The hardware was shit compared to what people thought it would be and the other systems that came out. It did set the foundation for some video game standards in 3D and that haven't been topped since, merely iterated upon.

I was 17 when gamecube came out in my country, 19-20 when i finally picked one up, yeah the library was weak compared to my PS2 but I had shit loads of late night fun smoking weed playing WW because of shift work.
I never liked Twin Snakes as the MGS2 mechanics killed the game but I enjoyed playing every other game on that list other than DD and RE4

It was the 4 controller ports. Made it extremely fun to play with friends and family. Mario Kart 64, Goldeneye, Diddy Kong Racing, Super Smash Bros, Coker bad Fur Day, pretty much all the wrestling games.

It's the same reason TMNT, Captain America and the Avengers, The Simpsons, X-men, Gauntlet, Battletoads arcade games were so popular. You could play with multiple people.

Quality over quantity. The N64 had 300 games of mostly good to excellent quality. The PS and PS2 had over 2,000 games consisting of a handful of very good ones, and a shit-ton of shovelware. Optical media may have attracted a lot of game publishers, but it attracted the ones that make shitty sports games and movie tie-ins.

Gba was actually fine just wish it was more than a castlevania system for me.

It had a core library of great games, even if the library was small. It was also great for multiplayer, unlike its immediate competition. Split screen shooters (mostly Goldeneye), Mario Party, Mario Kart, F-Zero X, Smash, that sort of thing.
The only great 4 player games on PS1 I can think of are Quake 2 (which keeps a really solid framerate with 4 players, shit's kind of unreal) and Crash Team Racing (which is better than MK64, but it damn better be since it came out later).

PS1's library was much bigger, to the point where could ask two people their top 5 games on it and neither will say a game the other said, but the N64 had a handful of well beloved games and had damn good multiplayer.

The machine is fairly great. Sure, it's full of garbage, but it's obvious garbage, and it didn't choke the life out of the machine like on the Wii (which actually has surprisingly few good games compared to the number it got).

After the NES and SNES, Nintendo thought they were so synonymous with gaming they could push back again and again the release of their next gen, shrug off the loss of square titles, and still come out on top against Sega AND the newcomer.
