Why the fuck do you idiots constantly complain about "muh revisionist history", as if the immediate reaction upon a game's release is the most accurate and objective one? How can you enjoy a product that took years to make in a couple of days and then critique it, especially when your perspective may be warped by the marketing machine and your own expectations, etc?

You can't appreciate an hour long music album in one hour.

I see this often with zelda, MGS and GTA. desu it took me a while to appreciate some games I didn't instantly like, off the top of my head:

I sure as hell never mocked it, both press and fans praised it a lot when it came out. It was treated as the series ending swan song, the ultimate fanservice encore for the fans, and a pinnacle of tech to boot. Not to mention the pure joy and fun that was MGO2.

If anything, MGS4 is a fine example of repeated memes turning into false-truths; yeah, everyone more or less ironically joked about the movie-length cutscenes (which never bothered me), but when the same shit got repeated x infinitum, some total newfags started biting it and parroting it.

Same thing happened in reverse with MGS2, with all the kiddos NOW praising it with the "Muh post-modern art!" joke.

This shows that you have literally, no joke, played VERY little of video games, before and after MGS2. Most of the ideas were not new even to MG series at the time.

the game is not 'shit', the game is excellent, purely in gameplay terms alone. you made a bunch of retarded assumptions about me never having played it, which was funny, but after playing it for the first time and even seeing youtube videos about it I thought it was shit, because I was a pleb like you who didn't 'get' it. There is something to get, and you don't get it. I only got it after having played the game 3 times and enjoying it more each time and truly understanding all of the themes involved, for which you need to delve deeper into all of the works (not just western, but JAPANESE) that influenced kojima, and also go into topics such as memes, reproduction and gender relations.

maybe. I think at this point we all know Kojima doesn't give a fuck about profitability, but I think generally it was a typical deceptive bait & switch. they entice you with the low brow themes and 'muh snakku' and then present you with something of way higher value. if you really are dead set on obtaining that low brow experience, you might be annoyed at the game, but it has a lingering effect that will entice you into replaying it with its excellent presentation, music, visuals and gameplay. I'm not always in the mood to watch arthouse either, but its quality cannot be denied
