Charging is a great tool for a greatsword, the only thing I'm saying is it doesn't have to be the only thing you do with it despite what some of the more....special players would have you think. Well yeah but with more monster diversity and stuff and actually taking quests for them from the Hunter gal which they already confirmed was a thing in mission.

But still, how often can you switch, or at the very least how often can you restock on your items? Because if every time you run out of potions at any time during any hunt you can just go grab more, it's going to greatly diminish the value of the potions you have, which has always been a core item management mechanic in the games.

Use Normal 2 and don't suck at aiming or range management. You can get 30 free N2 at the start of every LR quest from the blue box, and even wyverns and shit early on don't have enough HP to burn an entire stack of N2 before dying. All told it's not really any more expensive to gun if you have half a clue what you're doing than it is to melee, considering the cost of buying Whetstones (~80z EACH iirc) if you're not autistically scrounding up a free half-dozen every mission.

The worst part of early gunning is not having any guns with decent magazine sizes so you're constantly losing time and damage openings reloading.

From the start of the series, I used to play every single weapon. As it's gone on, I've bottlenecked that list in every new game up to the point where I only use 1 or 2 weapons now. I have no idea why, maybe because I've just pretty much mastered the 1 or 2 weapons and I'm at a comfortable point where I don't need the other weapons.

I use different weapons for different monsters and situations.

I use great sword through LR because the weapons I prefer to play with don't get decent sharpness and numbers until the end of LR. After that, I freely swap between LS, SnS, DB, and Bow/LBG depending on which monster I'm hunting. I usually go Gunner for Rathalos and other fliers, but there is hardly anything better than using DBs on a Tigrex.

3U is incredibly newbie friendly, but has no online play for the 3DS. Best music in the series
4U has the greatest tutorial in MonHun history, but has some balance issues between the weapon (namely a couple weapons just being so much better than the rest, rather than any one being weak). 4U also has a buttfuckload of content.
MHGen is the most silly of the 3DS games, but the styles are actually some neat fun. No real end game at the moment but that doesn't really hurt if you're new the series, since it's not likely you'll really be upset by a lack of G-Rank having never experienced it before.

The playerbase is currently split between Gen and 4U, but you should find some open rooms on each.

IG is crazy at high level play, but CB in 4U literally doesn't need a party to do what would usually take multiple people. CB can do element, status, wake up attacks (that it can do off of the sleep it triggered by itself if using a Sleep CB), cut off tails, and KOs. Oh yeah, it also can buff itself to a lance tier shield, just in case you're not gud enough to use guard points.

Monster Hunter is one series where you should feel absolutely no shame looking shit up; a good hunter is an informed one, so feel free to do so.

That being said, the Great Maccao is a very agile monster, but it doesn't actually have that much health. Learn its attack and bait it into the attacks you know how to deal with, then smack it a bit before going back to playing it safe. If you're new to the series then I suggest against trying to use the Great Sword against the Great Maccao.

Idk if what you're playing is anything like Gen but I slaughtered that thing with the switch axe. All I really do is try to get into a bullshit position and spam the X move in GS mode. It is really mostly about positioning, imo. Grab herbs, potions, and mega potions (potion + honey). If you really need it then carry additional mats to make more pots in-field (herb + blue mushrooms). Also you could make a couple traps, pitfall & electric or whatever they're called (trap tool + net = pit, trap tool + thunderbug is the other) and light a couple large barrel bombs in their face with them. You'll get the hang of it. Also if you combine toadstool and raw meat you can make poisoned meat, get a monster to eat that and you've got a lot of potential free damage.

As someone who has used SnS for 3 games now, several tips:

1)Since you're early game it shouldn't be a concern (because it isn't possible to even access said weapons), but eventually you will need a weapon of every element, barring maybe Sleep if you don't plan on playing online for some reason. Look up monster weaknesses and weak spots, then abuse the shit out of them.
2) Since you don't have to sheath to heal, you can just chug a potion while in a safe spot while a monster is doing some long winded shit.
3) Use your goddamn shield. You'll take a tiny bit of chip damage, but that's way better than taking the full brunt of an attack. Also, and this is important, you are completely invincible while your hunter is sliding backwards after taking a hit up until they fully recover (in which case you can just pull your shield up again). If it's not a laser beam or something equally intangible, you can block it with your shield. Use your goddamn shield.

the short answer is Artillery God, they absolutely fucked up hard by adding that single skill when shelling in 3U was reliably just as strong as melee pokes, especially with weapons like the Lucent Cuga GL. In 4 because of Artillery God, shelling completely outclassed melee. In 4U they nerfed shelling because of this. In Gen they removed Artillery God BUT NEVER REVERTED GL BACK TO 3U STRENGTH and so we stand here now

I hate HH. I want to love it, because the concept is so cool, but it's super unsatisfying to play. All of its attacks feel like you're slowly whipping the enemy with a paper towel. Like they're slow but oddly fast but lack any impact.

It just doesn't have that satisfying CRUNCH that most other weapons have.

Shitters needed a crutch. And on a shallow level the GS looks like an entirely simplistic as fuck weapon. So the devs started adding shit that essentially makes that weapon a crutch from which shitters can then used and not feel as faggy and shitty that they really are.


So blame the devs since like with the shit like crit draw being added essentially made that weapon the weapon of choice for shittly low skill nerds.

Though the irony of it all being that those type of fags give up so much damage since they spend so much time with their GSs sheathed since so many just go for the weakest and lamest of the charged attacks. Instead of having their weapon out and going for continuous damage and then combos into the hardest hitting charged the attack at the very fucking least.


So fuck the devs and fuck the shallow as fucking shitters that devs have catered to due to capitalism and all that jazz.
