You Persona 4 haters are retards. Persona 3, 4 and 5 all have problems. Weirdly, which Persona game (out of 3, 4 and 5) is the worst is an entirely subjective matter.

Persona 3, while still being my favorite, isn't god's holy fucking grail because the story doesn't fucking move until there's a full moon, the dungeon you traverse the whole game is the same fucking place, none of the social links are your party members (which reinforces the main story in a way, but some people would prefer it). The fusion mechanics are dumb, you get no EXP until the first full moon.

Maybe so, but you just get to shoot the shit with them and their problems aren't anything serious or the focus of their S. Links. In addition to that, there are more moments where the gang just hangs out for the fun of it in P4 than in P3 or 5, where whenever they go out to have some fun it always turns towards the plot or turns into a moment of developing a character. P4 just has the group go to the beach for some fun, and that's exactly how they spend their time there. You might say all of this is stupid because they're trying to track down a murderer and yet they seem totally carefree, and you might say its shallow that all they do is have fun and deal with problems that aren't all that serious, but some people like that carefree nature of the game, and understandably so.

I don't remember if it was 3 or Arena that mentioned it, but the Evokers were shaped like guns to simulate the sense of death, which somehow lets you summon your persona. It can't be a simple model gun either.

At the same time, the shape of the Evoker may not matter too much because the most important part seems like the Plume of Dusk inside each Evoker.

They explain it in The Answer, as I recall, but it was just a throwaway line. I think it's because it makes them feel like they're going to die and then their Persona comes out to protect them, which doesn't make much sense because after the first couple of times you'd be pretty confident you aren't going to die, but it looks cool so I'm okay with it. I also heard it was a reference to SDC when Jotaro shoots himself and Star Platinum comes out, but I know people are sensitive to references to JJBA, and I don't have a source for that. I think it's believable though seeing as the series was influenced by JJBA.

As for reason to join the team, Yusuke and Futaba both have pretty good reason for joining the team.
Yusuke was saved from Madarame, who would likely have abandoned Yusuke at the first moments notice as soon as he stopped turning up a profit.
Futaba was saved from her own Palace, that would have slowly killed her had the PT not intervened.

Ann joined for revenge for Shiho.
Ryuji for rescuing the students from Kamoshida.
Makoto to make-up for her fuck-up that got you into trouble in the first place.
Haru joined to not be sold/help Morgana/make daddy love her.
