The rest are loot clickers that aren't scary or very atmospheric. Diablo wasn't really about the loot, it was a horror game first and foremost, but as with so many things, the sequels misunderstood what made the original so wonderful.
Closest things to a spiritual successor are demons souls and exanima.
Ironically demons souls sequels did a similar thing, where in the case of dark souls 1,2 and 3,they thought it was the difficulty that was important, and not the atmosphere.

D2 is a bad sequel to diablo 1, but one of my top 5 favorite games.

Diablo 1 plays like a survival game, you can't run nor move fast and you crawl throug ha dungeon where you can't outrun enemies very well.

Diablo 2 is more like doom. Really fast paced, tons of enemies attacking you and you can teleport or run like crazy all over the screen. It doesn't play at all like D1, but a masterpiece in my opinion. Nothing has matched D2 yet, not even path of exile with all its complexity, their basic combat gameplay feels bad still for an action RPG
