It mainly depends on if the Switch can pick itself up in sales. If the sales for the Switch picks up, then Nintendo will make a smaller Switch Slim with a smaller screen to replace the 3DS, if it doesn't then Nintendo will make a handheld successor the 3DS. From the way it's looking, chances are Switch Slim may not become a thing until 2019 and if it's still not selling the way it's supposed to, then we may never see a Switch Slim and will get a 4DS instead.
