The Vita is dying out in Japan, but still has a sizable installbase. However, once the Switch catches up and improves its installbase, JRPGs will no longer be held back by outdated tech. The Switch may not be as powerful as the PS4 and X1 but it supports Unreal Engine 4 and Unity, which will allow JRPGs to flourish in that platform without being compromised, and they will turn out just fine on the PS4 and PC actually will look spectacular because they aren't held by outdated tech like the Vita.

The Switch is in between the X1 and Wii U, closer to the Xbox 1 but not quite there. Its not a bad console and the price point is great. If they made it as powerful as the PS4 and X1, the battery life would be poor, and the price point would be too high since it would remain a handheld/console hybrid. The way Nintendo handled it is ideal, with the Switch in existence, JRPGs will be able to thrive more. Japan is mostly a handheld based, the PS4 isn't going to net the insane sales it got here and in Europe. Therefore the Swich is a necessity so that small niche JRPGs can continue to thrive in that nation. JRPGs can't be entirely dependent on western sales on the PS4 and PC alone, they need to tap on the Japanese handheld audience to survive, and the Vita is about to die, so they're no other alternative but the Switch. The Switch's existence will benefit the JRPG genre, benefit Nintendo fans, and also benefit PS4/PC fans because JRPGs are going to be held back too much by weak handhelds like the Vita.

And no Nintendo shouldn't make a carbon copy of the PS4/X1, they wouldn't be able to convince core gamers or casuals from moving to it because they already own a PS4/X1. It would be too similar. The Switch was/is the only way for them to go and is possibly one of the best consoles they have made since the Super Nintendo.
