First day I haven't played since it came out. Had to start over several times. Decided to remake my party this time.
This is seriously almost my GOTY. If it continues to impress me, it might be. I look for and enjoy these threads every day. I like that this game allows you to use your imagination, like a game should instead of these photorealistic walking games. I do things like fantasize about my party while I'm driving and falling asleep. It's fun and I think Cleve is awesome. He may literally be my favorite game designer now because of how awesome he is. I can't wait to play 600 hours of this and it to become a big part of my life.

I am ashamed to say that all these years of modern game have made me a casual
>>
in all honesty why is Cleve convinced that this style of RPG is more fun than Morrowind/Baldurs gate etc

I was playing Fallout 2 a couple weeks for the first time before picking up Wizardry Seven based on the hype surrounding Grimoire and... well, I actually genuinely find myself enjoying it in deeper ways.

You create the characters and it has this epic personal immersive feeling that even Fallout 2 doesn't have, nor Morrowind. I think those are amazingly well made, masterpiece games. Well, at lest Fallout 2.

I think he's kind of right though from a game design standpoint. Something about all the combat and strategy of designing your characters, combined with the sparse and haunting feeling you get figuring shit out just makes it feel so personal and individual. Fallout 2 is awesome, duh, but it spells stuff out kind of. Whereas the Wiz style game doesn't really show you anything, rather than make you get into it. On an intellectual basis, isn't that what all games are... I mean anyone can tell looking at a Skyrim screenshot that it's fake... so to some extent it's all in your imagination

Wiz and Grimoire are so highly aware of this fact and they make use of it instead of trying to by pass it. Print that in your next Kotaku article, you fucking SJW retards

Anyway

I think the extra "bonus" we get with Grimoire too is that this is the first time a game like this has been released while the Internet is actually a thing. An online community (like these threads or people over on the steam forums) can talk about the game and try and all help each other progress through the game - whether that's through combat or the tricky puzzles. It's a nice and /comfy/ feeling.

FRIENDLY REMINDER

The small minority of prolific samefags that support the game blindly should be ridiculed or avoided. Their posts are redundant and easy to spot often including:

>Sape (negative)
>Thal (positive)
>Incline
>Blobber
>The spelling "Grimwah"
>Pressure to purchase Grimoire
>Contempt for the pirating of Grimoire
>Claims that uploaded copies of Grimoire contain viruses, bitcoin miners, keyloggers
>Insults and slurs intended to bait someone named Andrew
>Labeling of the game's art style as competent to gorgeous
>Labeling of the game's detractors as "Goons or Weebs"
>Stale memes
>a heavy reliance on buzzwards
>Idolatry involving Cleveland Blakemore
>Prejudices within the genre based on game region
>Grandstanding
>Elitism
>Rabid belligerence
>Ignorance regarding good game design
>Ignorance regarding good writing
>Ignorance regarding color theory
>Ignorance regarding math and the interactivity of simple systems

Poor reasoning and argumentative skills are also characteristic. When faced with logic they'll adopt a veteran gamer stance and insist their opponent is better suited playing games generally regarded as casual, i.e. "Go back to Skyrim, kid." Or the new favorite, "You haven't even played Wizardry."

Bottom of the barrel shitposts from rookie anglers.

What's the best general progression for the beginning of the game? Starting in the forest I fully explored that, then shrine of the raptor dungeon, then Aquavia. I went into the Village of Crowl, but I feel somewhat under-leveled. The firebeetles and stinkbugs wreck my party, but I don't have too hard of time with Brigands. Should I finish exploring Crowl completely first before moving onto the next areas? I've already explored the next forest area somewhat thoroughly, but the batcave fucks me.

>The firebeetles and stinkbugs wreck my party
Don't worry, all my characters are lvl 5 and 6 and I am still too under leveled to deal with those fucking bugs if one of them gets off a fireball. Best thing to do is just save scum your way through Crowl and pick your battles
>>
>>386823816
As long as you have a balanced party you should be able to CC the enemies. Definitely explore crowl first, theres npcs there that sell stuff and you can drop off your keys if you have an abundance. Theres places that are needed to progress in crowl that you can't miss if you explore.

>It's important to point out that all mainstream gaming magazines and publications have been firmly against Grimoire with the kind of ferocity that was last seen during Donald Trump's Presidential campaign. There has been a virtual shutout of all mentions and where they have deigned to review the game it has been through clenched teeth and often they seem to have been more interested in talking about me than the game itself. I take pride in the fact I have this kind of opposition, everybody should be so lucky. Grimoire is winning without their help in any way. It's only going to get worse for them because the game is selling itself - it doesn't need them at all. Read what Jonathan Swift said about this subject, you'll know why it is a great honor. The forces of decline are like the grains of sand in the ocean but incline will still beat them.

I read that Cleve said that the 8th game in the series was somehow lesser. Was he right? I think it actually looks good but IDK why he would think that.

I guess it kind of lacks the personalized aesthetic quality of the earlier Wizardry games. I mean all the enemies kind of ust look like grey polygon-blobs.

I actually think the more sparse and intuitively styled drawings of the other games is cool but I think the 8th in the series appears good too. For some reason I just think the restrictions actually make the gameplay more rewarding and imaginative

Kind of weird

Hey dipshit, it's a fucking dust old game that just another outdated RPG based off tabletop RPGs like D&D. Quit being an exclusivist faggot and just answer the question you piece of shit. I wanted to know why it's popular on here. The rest of the games you mentioned are either relevant enough or new/good enough to be posted on /v/, whereas this game is old and specifically oriented to a particular niche demographic of people that are familiar with tabletop RPGs. So again, fuck you for having you panties in a knot, you piece of camel shit. Glad I never bothered playing if you're a representation of this game's community.

I can understand his point, the early style 3D does detract from the art style of the previous games and there just isn't a whole lot of variety as opposed to 6 & 7. Wiz8 is still one of my favorite games of all time though, it really is the only Wizardry featuring more modern quality of life enhancements and the party banter is top notch. I still laugh my ass off when my whole party is insane and maniacally laughing and acting like retards.

You are supposed to Finish Village of Crowl's quest line, then go and finish the Druid Quest Line, finish up the Royal Beastiary and then go to Kublal through[Crescent Wilderness -> Harradin Groves -> Kublal], then finish Kublal and go to Waterport, finish Waterport and go back to Kublal and finish the Blackspike Mountains quest line, and then go back to Waterport and finish up the Pyramids. After that, you should be done with the continent, so ride through, with the helmet from Black Pierre, you ignore the Kraken and move onto Act 3.

Feel free to fill in the quest information.

Lachesis Tablet - You get it through the long Black Lich Dungeon.
Phoenix Cage -> Requires 35 Ancient History to comfortably read the runes to get the answer.
Aurora Tablet? - Kill Knorlo Knossis
Scylla Tablet - In Waterport, get in with Possessions, then find 3 pieces of pirate shit, and find the plug, two circles and the rubber band. Get into the cove with the pirate shit, steal the diary of the lead pirate, then fix the generator with the plug and rubber band, then put the circles into the holes in the other room. Take the lift up to the power room, flip on the power, go back down to the electro works and go into the well to Saltwyrm caves. Use the diary to put in the correct code to get the Scylla tablet.
Owl Chest - Requires 50 Ancient History to comfortably read the Roman Runes
Nemesis Tablet - You get through the Pyramids, but once you enter you can't leave until you finish.
>>
>>386825569

You find one staff with 7 ressurection charges early on, later you can buy/learn ressurection and raise dead (needs to be raise dead for aeorbs/vampyrs).
If it stays dead for 7 days they permadie.
Its really hard to get good hp starting hp on berserkers, metalsmiths and necromancers. Switch their gear and tank with something else like ranger or thief. Its super easy to get a mere wolfin ranger to 36 hp on lvl 1 and they can wear shields and brigandine.

Grimwah could be a good game, but it's not worth $40.

Oh lord, you shills are too much. Calling attention to the game's flaws is the opposite of an echo chamber and if your "discussion" can be derailed this easily, chances are it probably wasn't an actual discussion in the first place.

I mean, you think that Grimwah is the first game getting "shitposted" in /v/'s history? If people decide to troll your bitch asses, it's because you allowed them to see how sensitive you are about people bringing up the game's flaws and they do so because they want to trigger you.

Considering Cleve doesn't know how to code or label his shit properly, it'd honestly be easier trying to translate Mandarin into Latin than to figure out what does what.

Besides, I don't see how using the cheat engine renders his point moot when the whole point of the cheat engine is to shift values around. If the numbers aren't working properly, that's an issue with the game, not the engine.

You will want to buy Grimoire one day, and you will NEVER EVER get it on sale. You will forever know that you lost on the 10% discount and you will be sorry. Buy it right now or accept your inevitable fate.

>This game is not shovelware. It's not a casual game. It's not trying to appeal to a wider audience to make more money by dumbing down to lowest common denominator. Coming from a society that has dumbed down everything to cater to them since the day they were born, many newbs will wonder what the fuss is all about. Grimoire is for elite connoisseurs of computer roleplaying games with very refined tastes. If you don't think a game like Grimoire is worth $1000, much less $40 then you probably are not a fan of these kinds of games. You are welcome to look on the Steam store, on GOG, on Humble Bundle or anywhere on the internet to find a similar game. You won't find it because it doesn't exist. Even the Wizardry titles are just pale shadows of Grimoire now, they are forerunners but Grimoire gets it all right. Grimoire is the gold standard for these sorts of games. People who believe this was going to be just another blobber will discover they were sorely mistaken. Grimoire is the first and possibly last game of this calibre, at least until Grimoire II arrives.

>P.S. After what is likely an opening discount, Grimoire will never be discounted or put on sale ever again. You will never see Grimoire sold for $15 but in 8 years you might see it down to $20. In the meantime, I guess you won't be playing this game if you're not respectful enough to pay what it is worth as product. I am amazed at the shovelware people pay $50 for without thinking but believe because Grimoire has an old fashioned aesthetic it must be worth less that those titles. Neanderthals have an older aesthetic too ... 300 pounds of muscle, six foot tall with an 1800 cc brain and the ability to see in the dark. I don't know that this implies they were inferior to modern people.

So first you claimed it didn't have bugs, now you want only specific bugs. Nice attempt at moving goalposts, but anyway, here's a few "unacceptable crash conditions" that you seem to have a hard on over (just ctrl + f "crash" and enjoy yourself) :

And each and every one of them are bugs that trigger in specific circumstances that most people won't encounter during play. It's not like being unable to click on your character portrait at launch or not being able to alt-tab, which is apparently still an issue for some people.

CON (physical) and WIL(mental) reduce the amount of debuff a character receives. The only way to increase base resistance is through spells/items as is standard for these types of games. I said that Shovelknight had no bugs because I cannot remember running into any during multiple playthroughs of the game. Hey do you think this game would be for me?

The games of this genre that I have completed so far are:
Etrian Odyssey series
Might and Magic from 3 up
Grimrock series
The Dark Spire

What is the freedom of character creation like? Can you create very out there character mixtures like maybe a dodge tank bard, and does the armor/equipment selection support you in these actions or will you eventually feel road blocked into a specific direction? (like how in grimrock the armor for late game heavily forced you into a face tank direction)

Be aware that if you just reply ITS SHIT I will assume your a shitposter. Give real critics.

>For the record, yes, I do tell them that the game has bugs, and I also tell them it is to be expected on a game of this size that has only just released.
There are games that are larger in scope that have had WAY stabler releases than Grimwah had, there's no fucking excuse for a game taking 20 years to iron out bugs to be so unstable as a whole. Hell, I've played early access games that were more stable at launch.
You're doing your friends a disservice by lying to them like that.

You keep saying that guy from /vg/ used a POS software and that is why no stat did anything, but he only tested for clearly visible shit like elemental resistances and hp regen.

>What is the freedom of character creation like?
Most of the stats don't do anything, most skills are dump stats, the game outright lies to you at times like implying that Drow were the mage class when they have the worst mana regen in the game, and if you go in without a Bard, your early game is going to be hell.
>Can you create very out there character mixtures like maybe a dodge tank bard
Not really, I'd say the game is figured out but there's no telling what's working as intended and what's a glitch.
> does the armor/equipment selection support you in these actions or will you eventually feel road blocked into a specific direction
From what I can tell, armor is bugged in that if you get too much of it, your armor values actually go deep into the negatives and certain equipment like lutes are practically mandatory due to Bards, as mentioned below.

Honestly, I wouldn't buy this game just yet, it's still a long ways away from being worth the $40 price tag.
>>

Play Wizardry 6-8 first. If you want more after that, play Grimoire. Hopefully most of the bugs will be fixed by then.

Name one solo developer who has created a game of this scope, without bugs. And I mean 600 hours of hand crafted content. I'll even be fair and make it "400 hours" since you probably don't believe it's 600 anyway.

>there's no fucking excuse for a game taking 20 years to iron out bugs to be so unstable as a whole.
How about ANSI C code that has been maintained since the 90's and has to run on modern operating systems and hardware? Your "early access" shit slapped together in unity isn't even in the same ballpark.

>You're doing your friends a disservice by lying to them like that.

Developer here, I knew this was going to happen before Grimoire even launched. From the descriptions of bugs he was fixing, there was no way it was going to be stable. The way new issues kept cropping up definitely suggested the code was in such a state of disrepair that changing or fixing something in one place broke something else.

>Then how exactly would you be able to tell that he stole content or not?
You might find it surprising to know that after creating my party and playing the game for 46 hours that I don't give one ounce of a fuck about some "stolen content" (rumors?? confirmations??) for a developer that I don't even know outside of the shitposting in the screenshots people post here. I like the game.

>I'm not the one bragging about being the best programmer in the world
>See: "Shitposting in the screenshots posted in the thread"

>Didn't he end up falling off the radar from mismanagement and poorly received games?
He was THE modern engine trailblazer throughout the 90's and early 2000's, I found it an apt comparison since Grimoire's developer has/had been programming in a similar era of video games. Carmack was a black magic programmer, and even he released shit with bugs.

>It probably would've saved him time to be honest.
It wouldn't, I can promise you that.

>Doesn't mean it didn't happen.
So, if a game has a bug on release now we treat it like a 9/11 "never forget..."? Somehow, I am sure people will get over the traumatic experience of their save games not being able to be loaded for a day.

You're really something special.
Let me clarify to you one last time.
There are two possibilities here :

A) Most of the stats do obscure effects like % to resist something. The /vg/ poster looked at all the wrong things. Using cheat engine to get those stats makes absolutely no difference if this is the case, so you're retarded for saying its a buggy mess that broke grimoire. It would change nothing.

B) Attribute changes are easily detected, so cheat engine fucked up or the poster simply lied. It would be extremely simple to level a character to 3 or 4, save, dump all in one stat and see what changes. Most players do this without even trying. Literally no one disproved a single stat in his list so far, so you're fucking retarded for claiming he provided 0 proof, its obvious stats work in mysterious ways (if at all).

Also before you say it, no, saying some vague bullshit like IT FEELS LIKE ITS WORKING when you're levelling your characters normally, gaining skill points, changing equipment and constantly fighting new monsters, etc isnt evidence. In fact its hilarious that you faggots keep repeating "just play the game and you will see", as if adding a million variables wouldnt make it even harder to tell if you have a better save against disease.
>>
>>386855392
>since Grimoire's developer has/had been programming in a similar era of video games
Actually he programmed in the 80s for the C64. He barely did anything of note in the 90s bar an obscure Wiz7 credit and a supposed aborted Wizardry game.

You're right, considering how shitty of a programmer Cleve is, I could see him spending 20 years on something like Game Maker and STILL end up releasing bugs somehow.
>So, if a game has a bug on release now we treat it like a 9/11 "never forget..."?
No, but pretending that it never happened just because it was fixed eventually doesn't mean that it didn't happen. It's a disgrace how much Cleve fucked up and yet you continue to defend him.

Would agree with you if it actually worked properly and didn't have gamebreaking balance issues on launch (lol bards) and wasn't being repeatedly patched with patches that break shit even further.

It works differently to how you think it does. There isn't a big fat "PORT MY GAME" button. But I know that you know that, and you're just arguing for the sake of it at this point.

> I could see him spending 20 years on something like Game Maker and STILL end up releasing bugs somehow.
Yeah, if you started developing something now it probably wouldn't run without bugs in 20 years, let alone natively on the systems that come out by then. I don't know why you think this has anything to do with "being a good coder."

>No, but pretending that it never happened
Didn't say that. This is TWICE now you have assumed that I am "pretending there isn't bugs" and this is ANOTHER time I am reminding you that I admitted there was bugs earlier. You accused me of not being able to tie my shoes, I am surprised you can even wipe your own ass.
>>

>Stonekeep ended up costing $5 million to make my man
Thank you for supporting my point, although most of that cash was graphics and dev hell related.

>Hey do you think this game would be for me?
MM3-5 is the only thing you have played that is even remotely similar to it, so hard to say. You will probably like it, though. Just a fair warning, compared to what you have played so far this game will require a herculean effort to get through. It is not newcomer friendly.
>What is the freedom of character creation like?
Pretty basic. Classes perform a specific purpose, not a whole hell of a lot you can do to get weird with it. The meat of character progression is team composition and skillpoint/spell distribution to pass various skill checks and challenges. For example, I have a sage that focuses on utility spells and bard stuff, but I could have built him around offensive spells instead.

This game felt like shit when I first started but now that I know where all the UI elements are it's very good. I wouldn't say no to some hotkeys but as long as you have units that are specialized it makes things easier.

A couple things in combat are bugging me though, firstly you only seem to get weapon skill-ups on kill, so at the moment my thief gets all the kills before my other members can attack and it's skewing everything.

Secondly, the whole not penetrating when you're low-ish on vit is pretty horrible, I think it's a decent mechanic but it'd feel better if the chance to fail only kicked in at <50% vit. At the moment I could be at full vit, with a decently leveled weapon skill and attacking a lower level enemy and still not penetrate multiple times in a row.

So yeah, game has its issues but if you're not playing this because it looks dated just try it for a couple hours.
>>
>>386856864
>look better
Nobody's talking about graphics here. And Stonekeep looked better one to two years before Grimoire was even a line of code and was still considered outdated even then. Arguing that "b-but thal programmed in the 90s!" holds no weight here.
>>
>>386857008
I'm not sure what you mean by "outdated" if you're not talking about graphics specifically.

I mean, I would forgive Grimoire for being "oudated" (???) in comparison to Stonekeep for the fact that Stonekeep had a larger dev team, larger budget and didn't have 600 hours of content, but anyway.

I've used game maker before and played several games that were made using Game Maker as well. If Cleve actually sat his ass down and fiddled with it, he could've probably released Grimwah in a fraction of the time...assuming he was a competent programmer.
>Yeah, if you started developing something now it probably wouldn't run without bugs in 20 years, let alone natively on the systems that come out by then.
